The 2015 Lafayette shooting occurred at the Grand Theatre movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 23, 2015.[2] A gunman, described as a 58-year-old white male, opened fire during a showing of Trainwreck. Two people were killed and seven others were injured. The gunman subsequently committed suicide.

Details

The shooting

The shooting occurred at around 7:20 p.m. and ended when the gunman committed suicide after officers entered the theater. More than 100 people were inside the theater at the time of the shooting.[3] The injuries of the survivors ranged from light to critical, and were inflicted either from gunshot injuries and/or during fleeing accidents.

Aftermath

The other local Grand Theatre was also closed, while the entire area was locked down. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal traveled to the scene of the shooting and said he was praying for the victims.[1][4]

The Louisiana State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Lafayette Parish Sheriff, and Lafayette Police Department police participated in the investigation. Police believe the shooter acted alone, but have not confirmed a motive.[5][1][6][4]

Responses to the shooting

Amy Schumer, who wrote and starred in the film, posted on her Twitter, "My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana."[7]

The theater and its parent company, the Southern Theatres, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.[8]
