CapCut, formerly known as JianYing (Chinese: 剪映), is a Chinese short-form video editing app developed by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.[1][2][3]
The app was first released as JianYing[4][5] In 2020, it was renamed as CapCut and became available internationally.[6] It later expanded to include web and desktop versions for Mac and Windows.[5] (This was change was officially made in 2023, and fully rolled out in 2024. There for was also promoted heavily.[7][8])
in China in 2019 and was initially available for iPhone and Android.As of March 2023[update], CapCut has more than 200 million active users each month, and according to The Wall Street Journal, it was downloaded more than the TikTok app in March 2023.[9] In March 2023, it was the second-most downloaded app in the U.S., behind that of Chinese discount retailer Temu.[10][11]
The free version of CapCut has multiple features, including speed options for adjusting the duration of clips.[5] The Auto Captions tool can be used to generate accurate video captions that can be edited within the app.[5]
CapCut supports basic video editing functions, including editing, trimming, and splitting clips.[5] It allows the addition of new clips to projects but is limited to single-layer editing, with the exception of overlays, which enable picture-in-picture effects and background removal using the Cutout tool.[5] Users can export completed projects directly to TikTok or save them to their device for sharing on other platforms.[5]
