Dan Keeling is an English food and wine writer, wine importer and restaurateur who co-owns Noble Rot magazine, the Noble Rot restaurants, and the wine merchants Keeling Andrew. Keeling previously worked in A&R, during which time he signed the British rock band Coldplay.[1]
Following his time as a scout at A&M records, Keeling joined Parlophone Records where he signed Coldplay in April 1999.[2] In the liner notes for Coldplay's 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head, the band referred to Keeling when they stated "The Scientist is Dan" about their 2002 single The Scientist. He was also responsible for signing Athlete and Lily Allen at Parlophone.[3]
Keeling then became Managing Director of Island Records, where he signed English indie-rock band Bombay Bicycle Club [4] before meeting his future Noble Rot business partner Mark Andrew, who worked next door at Roberson Wine. [3] [5]
In February 2013, Dan Keeling and Mark Andrew founded the triannual wine and food magazine Noble Rot.
In October 2020, they published their first book, Wine From Another Galaxy: Noble Rot which won the 2021 Drinks Book Award from the Guild of Food Writers and was nominated at the 2022 James Beard Foundation Media Awards in the Beverage without Recipes category. [5][6][7]
Keeling has been awarded Emerging Wine Writer in 2015[8] and Food & Drink Writer in 2017[9] and 2018[10] at the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards, was Fortnum & Mason's Drink Writer of the Year winner in 2016[11] and occasionally writes for the Financial Times.[12]
In 2015, Keeling and Andrew opened their first restaurant, Noble Rot Restaurant & Wine Bar on Lamb’s Conduit Street in London with Michelin starred Chef Stephen Harris of the Sportsman in Seasalter, Kent. [5]
The restaurant won the award for the best wine list at the National Restaurant Awards three years in a row from 2016 to 2018,[13] and won the 2019 award for best Red wine serving restaurant at the World Restaurant Awards in Paris.[14]
In September 2020, Noble Rot opened a second restaurant in the former site of the infamous The Gay Hussar in Soho led by ex-Sardine chef Alex Jackson,[15][16] and in April 2023, its third restaurant in Shepherd Market, Mayfair with former The Square and Perilla Chef Adam Wood. [17]
