Gelora Bung Karno is a TransJakarta bus rapid transit station located in Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Jakarta, Indonesia. The station, which is located in corridor 1, which runs from north to south, takes its name from the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, which is located north of the station.
Gelora Bung Karno BRT station was inaugurated along with the soft operational launch of Transjakarta Corridor 1 on 15 January 2004. Associated Press recorded on their covarge archive that this station was one of the most busiest and crowded station on the first day of operational,[1] because the inauguration of corridor 1 was held at this station. This station, along with all stations at corridor 1—and the BRT corridor itself—began its commercial operational on 1 February 2004.[citation needed]
The station initially had a small building which was enlarged at late July 2018 to accommodate spectators for the 2018 Asian Games, using materials from former Al Azhar BRT station.[2][3] On late 2018, two pedestrian bridges which became access to Gelora Bung Karno and Bundaran Senayan stations were temporarily closed to be revitalized,[4] replaced with a temporary pelican crossing.[5][6] The revitalization of the pedestrian bridge access to the Gelora Bung Karno BRT station was inaugurated on 28 February 2019 with a new artistic design.[7][8]
On 15 April 2022, the revitalization of the Gelora Bung Karno BRT station began with 10 other stations, including Dukuh Atas 1, Tosari, Juanda, Cikoko Stasiun Cawang, Sarinah (now renamed M.H. Thamrin), Kebon Pala (now renamed Matraman Baru), Kwitang, Balai Kota, Bundaran HI, and Stasiun Jatinegara 2 BRT stations.[9][10] As an alternative, a shuttle bus route has been prepared to support waiters during the bus stop revitalization process. The route consists of the National Monument–Semanggi (1ST) route which operates in corridor 1 (until 11 September 2022[11]), and the Pecenongan-Pintu Air Juanda (2PJ) route in corridor 2.
The Gelora Bung Karno BRT station was reopened on 17 August 2022, coinciding with the 77th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. Operation was carried out by customer trial for some time.[12][13]
