John Frederick Knott OBE FRS FREng (born 9 December 1938) is a British metallurgist.

He was a Research Officer at the Central Electricity Research Laboratories, Leatherhead from 1962 to 1966, after which he became a lecturer in the Department of Materials, Science and Metallurgy at Cambridge University (1967 to 1981). He moved to University of Birmingham as professor and head of the School of Metallurgy and Materials from 1990 to 1996, was appointed fifth Feeney professor of physical metallurgy (1994 to 2007) and was Dean of Engineering from 1995 to 1998. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1990 [2] and was awarded their Leverhulme Medal in 2005.[3]
