Michael Meyer (June 11, 1921 - August 3, 2000) was an English translator and biographer. He was born in London into a merchant family of Jewish origin, and studied English at Christ Church College, Oxford. He is best known for his translations of the works of two Scandinavian playwrights, August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen. The Guardian said of Meyer that he was "the greatest translator of Ibsen and Strindberg into English there has ever been."^[1] He also wrote acclaimed biographies of both these playwrights; the volume on Ibsen won the 1971 Whitbread Award for Biography. His autobiography Not Prince Hamlet was published in 1989.
