Nintendo Pictures Co., Ltd.[b] (formerly Dynamo Pictures, Inc.[c]) is a Japanese animation studio owned by Nintendo that develops "visual content" using Nintendo properties.[1]
The company was founded by Hiroshi Hirokawa on March 18, 2011, in Tokyo, Japan under the name of Dynamo Pictures.
On October 1, 2021, the "Amusement" section of the company, dedicated to creating theater and VR attractions for theme parks, was spun off into a separate business called Dynamo Amusement, Inc. and subsequently became a affiliate subsidiary of GENDA, a Japanese amusement arcade company.[2]
Nintendo announced their intent to acquire Dynamo Pictures and change its name to Nintendo Pictures on July 14, 2022, citing the focus of the company to strengthen the planning and production structure of visual content.[3][4][5] The deal closed on October 3, with the company becoming a full subsidiary of Nintendo, as well as adopting its new name.[1][6][7] Many fans of the 2006 video game Elite Beat Agents noticed that a mission in the game references a then-fictional company called Nintendo Pictures.[8]
The company has worked on CG production for animated series and films including Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Garo: Divine Flame, TsukiPro the Animation, Yuri on Ice, and the Pikmin short films. The company has also worked on motion capture for video games such as Persona 5, Monster Hunter Stories, and Nier Replicant, in addition to lending production assistance to works such as Earwig and the Witch and Macross Delta Absolute Live!!!!!!.[9][10]
Since being acquired by Nintendo in 2022, they have functioned as a support studio specializing in animation, art, design, and cinematic work for Nintendo developed and published games. Nintendo Pictures and its staff would start being credited in the company's games the following year, starting with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario RPG.
