The Proton S70 is a compact sedan[1] produced by Malaysian automobile manufacturer Proton. The vehicle was previewed on 20 November 2023, as it is marked the first sedan car produced by Proton following the 49.9% share acquisition by Geely in 2017.[2] The S70 is the successor to the Proton Prevé.
The S70 is developed as the result of a joint venture from Geely Auto. The vehicle is based on the fourth generation Geely Emgrand.[3] The first generation Proton S70 has been unveiled at Proton's Tanjong Malim, Perak plant and will begin production on 1 November 2023.[4] The S70 was launched on 28 November 2023, with four variants are offered in Executive, Premium, Flagship and Flagship X.[5] It competes against the Honda City, Nissan Almera, and Toyota Vios.[6] In terms of size, the Proton S70 is smaller compared to the fourth generation Geely Emgrand even though the S70 is positioned in the C-segment while the Geely Emgrand is in the B-segment.[7]
The "-70" suffix is correlated to it being a C-segment vehicle, similar to the Proton X70[8] despite being based on a B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform[9] which would entail a "-50" suffix. The Proton S70 was thought to be named S50 several months before being unveiled[10] due to it being based after the B-segment Geely Emgrand.[11]
For the Malaysian market, the S70 comes with a more powerful 1.5-litre port-injected three-cylinder unit with turbocharger coded JLH-3G15T paired with a 7-speed DCT,[12] it is the same engine used on the Proton X50. Unlike the fourth generation Geely Emgrand, which only uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine unit coded JLC-4G15B paired with a CVT and 5-speed manual.[13]
