Automatic or Manually assisted: Automatic, unsupervised

Programming language(s): Python, PyWikipedia

Source code available: Yes

Function overview: Creates redirects from trade names to drug articles

Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Wikipedia talk:PHARMA#Letting a bot redirect trade names to generic names

Edit period(s): Initially one-time run; further runs when new databases turn up

Estimated number of pages affected: Initially up to 887

Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Yes

Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Yes

Function details: Trade names are obtained from the Merck manual (and hopefully from other sources in future runs). The bot includes ((R from trade name)) in the redirects, and also adds it to already existing redirects. ((R from alternative name)) / ((R from brand name)) are replaced with the more specific ((R from trade name)). Redirects pointing to a wrong page aren't edited but only logged to the bot's user space.

Double redirects are resolved; redirects to nonexistent pages are omitted; no existing pages are overwritten.

Trial complete. 6 new redirects, 5 redir templates replaced with ((R from trade name)), 19 trade name templates added. Looks fine to me. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 19:34, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Approved for extended trial (200 edits). Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. Let's do a broader sample. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 17:34, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure "H/P/ Acthar Gel" [1] and "Epogen/Procrit" [2] are the correct names to use? Quick google says "Epogen" and "Procrit" are the same but different name. "H/P/ Acthar" seems to be "H.P. Acthar". —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 11:02, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. I'll modify the code so that trade names with slashes are broken up, creating two redirects. I have found a second entry like like "H/P/ Acthar" in the Merck list, namely "D/H/ E/ 45". I think I'll just leave out such items (single letters between slashes, I'd say). While I think that Merck is a reliable source and a quick look over the list hasn't revealed any more strange entries, I can't be sure there aren't any.
Shall I nominate the two erroneous redirs you found for deletion? --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 13:17, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Anything less than 2/3 letters between slashes is probably some weird name, so those are best to be ignored. I see no reason not to break up slashed entries with proper words, given you examine the results of that. You can probably CSD the two bad redirects as unlikely redirects. In any case, error rate is small enough and a quick glance through the contributions should reveal weird entries. Other than that, no issues.
