Yaariyan is a 2014 Bollywood coming-of-age romance adventure film directed by Divya Khosla Kumar,[2] starring Himansh Kohli, Serah Singh and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles.[3] It marks the debut of the director[4] as well as the lead star cast. The film was produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banner of T-Series Super Cassettes Industries.

Shot in St. Joseph's School, Darjeeling, Yaariyan tells the story of 5 close friends who are exploring the best moments of their lives in college, experiencing different relationships and learning new values every day. The response to the promotional material on YouTube led the distributor to release the film two weeks earlier than initially planned. The film released on 10 January 2014 with 1200 screens release in India.[5][6]

Early 2012, Bhushan Kumar announced making a film in college romance genre and that Divya Khosla Kumar would be the director.[citation needed] Soon, an announcement was released that the cast of the film will include new comers Himansh Kohli[7] (last seen in the TV show Humse Hai Life) on Channel [V],[8] Rakul Preet Singh (Miss India 2011 worked in Kannada, Telugu & Tamil movies),[9] and Nicole Faria (Miss Earth 2010 popular in Modeling Industry).[10] This movie will bring to the industry new director and new young star cast, including Bollywoods rising starlet half-German half-Indian Evelyn Sharma[11] to play an angelic dream girl. The movie also has senior actors like Gulshan Grover[12] and Deepti Naval[13] play important characters in the movie.

The title of the movie was registered with Saif Ali Khan[14] (for the movie Cocktail) who gladly gave away the rights to his friend Bhushan Kumar[15] to use for this film.

The production budget of film is 110 million (US$1.3 million)[1]

Filming

The shoot began in Mumbai[16] followed by shoots in Australia and then Sikkim and Darjeeling.[17]

The soundtrack for the film was composed by Pritam. There is also a special number by Honey Singh titled ABCD. Mithoon rendered tracks for this film as well. Arko Pravo Mukherjee also composed a track. First full track ABCD was released on 25 November 2013. Baarish was released on 29 November 2013. It crossed 1 million views on YouTube in 2 days. Audio album of the movie was released on 9 December 2013 on internet. Song Allah Waariyan was released on 11 December 2013. The song is sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali, and written as well as composed by Arko Pravo Mukherjee.

Yaariyan was panned by critics. It received a lot of negative reviews by both critics as well as public. Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave 0 stars out of 5 stars , stating that "It is dull, boring, pathetic and doesn't seem to get over". Paloma Sharma of Rediff.com gave Half star out of 5 saying "Yaariyan is a brand new recipe for disaster!" Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV gave 1 Star stated "Calling Yaariyan silly would be the understatement of the year. It is mind-numbingly idiotic. It would make perfect sense to give this film a miss." FilmsofIndia gave one and a half star by saying " the film has nothing new to offer. With a weak script, weaker performances, tedious on-screen chemistry and an unimpressive starcast."

Yaariyan had a good first weekend of around Rs 16.50 crore nett[18] Yaariyan grossed around Rs 2.50 crore nett on first Monday taking its four day total to 19 crore nett.[19] Yaariyan had the same figure as Monday as it collected 2.50 crore nett taking its five day total to Rs 21.50 crore nett [20] Yaariyan collected around 2.75 crore nett in second weekend.[21]

Overseas

Yaariyan was screened in the UAE and had a limited release.[22][dead link]
