Yik Yak is an anonymous social media app. It is available for iOS and Android and it that allows people to anonymously create and view posts within a 10 mile radius depending on how many yakkers are nearby. It differs from other anonymous sharing apps such as PostSecret and Whisper in that it is intended for sharing primarily those in close proximity to the user, potentially making it more intimate and relevant for people reading the posts. It was founded by Tyler Droll and Brooks Buffington.[1]
Yik Yak was started in 2013 after CEO Tyler and COO Brooks graduated together from Furman University.
The Wall Street Journal Blog reported on June 30, 2014, that Yik Yak raised $10 million in venture capital funding, in addition to the initial 1.5 million raised earlier this year. [2]
Amidst recent controversy concerning cyber-bullying,[3] Yik Yak placed a geo-ban on their app within high school campuses. As a result, Yik Yak does not currently work at high schools, unlike its main competitor Maskerade.
