History

In the late 2000s and early 2010s orbital routes began being introduced in Melbourne as an alternative form of public transport to trains which allowed people to get to major areas without needing to go via the city. It is currently the longest orbital route in the southern hemisphere.[2] In 2005 route 700 between Mordialloc and Box Hill was given SmartBus status which offers premium features which are only available on other smart bus routes. In 2009 route 700 launched as 903 and was extended to Altona becoming the red orbital route. In 2021 the 903 route became the first to have Australian made electric buses service the route in Melbourne.[3][4]

Since 31 January 2022, this route has been operated by bus operator Kinetic Melbourne.[5]
