Abjol Miah (Bengali: আবজল মিয়া; born 15 December 1971) is a British politician, Chairman of the Respect Party and former councillor for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Early life

Miah was born in Sylhet District, Bangladesh. His family moved to Tower Hamlets, London, England when he was six months old, where he has lived since.[1]

Miah attended Morpeth School. He read BA Social Anthropology and Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London.[1]

Political career

In May 2006,[2] Miah was elected councillor for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Chairman of the Respect Party. He is a member of the Respect National Committee. He currently sits on Tower Hamlets Overview Scrutiny Committee and made contribution on the Strategic Development and Development Committee.[1][3][4]

In 2010, Miah stood as the Respect parliamentary candidate in Bethnal Green and Bow constituency at the 2010 general election.[5] He came third receiving 8,532 votes (16.8%), Liberal Democrats' Ajmal Masroor came second with 10,210 votes (20.1%) and Labour candidate Rushanara Ali won with 21,784 votes (42.9%).[6][7]

Other work

Since the mid-1990s, Miah has been a youth and community worker with Tower Hamlets Council, he has five years experience working with voluntary sector community organisations, two years as a drug prevention education officer for Healthy Schools and three years working at the Drug Action Team.[8]

Miah was the founding chair of Tower Hamlets Muslim Advisory Group to the Metropolitan Police Borough Commander, as well as serving in other community organisation boards. Miah is involved in various voluntary organisation in the borough. He has led campaigns including defending council housing and tackling over crowding, opposing drug dealing, poverty, justice for the people of Palestine, invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, racism as well as other issues.[8]

Miah is a presenter of local radio show Easy Talk. He is also a martial arts instructor.[1]

Personal life

Miah is a Muslim[5][9] and lives in Bow[1] with his wife Shazeda Khanom, two daughters and two sons.[8]

Miah has helped raise funds for cyclone victims in Bangladesh and worked with Viva Palestina to give aid to people in Gaza.[1]
