Area code in eastern Wisconsin, United States
North American telephone area code 920 covers much of eastern Wisconsin. It was created on July 26, 1997, in a split from area code 414. 414 formerly covered the entire eastern third of the state. 920 will eventually be overlaid with area code 274, but 920 is not predicted to be exhausted until 2028.
A mnemonic device many used for the new area code was to remember Green Bay Packer Reggie White's jersey number, 92, and add a zero.[1]

Ten-digit dialing
Area code 920 has telephone numbers assigned for the central office code 988 (e.g., 988-0199). As of October 17, 2020, 988 has been assigned by law as a three-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. To avoid conflicts in switching systems, the Federal Communications Commission has ordered telecommunication carriers of 83 area codes, including 920, to transition to ten-digit dialing in the respective numbering plan area, even though it is not part of an overlay plan. Alternatively, the 988 prefix may be retired in the numbering plan. Per the timeline set by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, permissive dialing begins on April 24, 2021 and ten-digit dialing is required starting on October 24, 2021.[2]
