Basilica in Márianosztra

Basilica of Our Lady of Hungary is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Diocese of Vác located in Márianosztra, Hungary. The former monastery church is consecrated in honor of Mary the Mother of God and has the rank of Basilica Minor since 2012.[1]

In 1352, king Louis I of Hungary had build a church and a Paulist monastery in a rural area, where his daughter Jadwiga of Poland was brought up.[2] The settlement that later developed around the monastery was named Márianosztra after the patron saint of the monastery, Maria nostra (Latin "Our Mary"). During the Turkish subjugation, the complex became a ruin. After the reconstruction in 1712, the church was rededicated in 1729 and received a copy of the icon of Black Madonna of Częstochowa. In 1786, the dissolved Paulists had to leave the monastery, which was later used as a prison, and the church was given to a newly formed parish. In 1989, the Paulists returned to Hungary to take care of this sanctuary again. In 2012, the church received the rank of Basilica Minor from Pope Benedict XVI.
