Zakho is a Kurdish city of over 50,000 population. People in the Zakho district of the Duhok Governorate attacked the military bases and stormed government buildings and took control of the town on 13 March. The town fell to government forces on 1 April. Fighting continued until October when an agreement was made for Iraqi withdrawal from Zakho and other parts of Iraq's Kurdish-inhabited region.
