ClimateChangeTown.pk is the first town in the world to be named as a website. The town was washed away in the floods of 2022. The town was rebuilt in partnership with Sindh Peoples Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF). In October 2023, the citizens along with SPHF petitioned the government to rename their town ClimateChangeTown.Pk with the intention of creating awareness about the devastating impact on climate change in Pakistan, and raising funds for sustainable rehabilitation projects across the region. The town is situated in the Mirpur Khas district of Sindh, a province in Pakistan.
Background In recent years, Pakistan has been significantly affected by the adverse impacts of climate change, particularly devastating floods that have caused widespread destruction in various regions. The town of ClimateChangeTown.pk is an innovative response to this crisis, aiming to leverage public awareness and fundraising efforts by aligning with digital platforms.
Concept and Proposal The concept of renaming the town to a website URL was initially proposed by Sindh Peoples Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF), an organisation dedicated to assisting individuals and communities affected by floods in Pakistan. SPHF envisioned a unique approach to raising funds and awareness by renaming the town, thereby creating a distinctive identity linked to climate change mitigation and disaster recovery.
Location ClimateChangeTown.pk is strategically located in the Mirpur Khas district of Sindh, Pakistan. This region has historically faced challenges related to flooding and was severely affected by the floods in 2022, leaving almost 2.1 million families homeless in Sindh.
