Joseph Juhn 전후석 (born May 19, 1984) is a Korean American documentary filmmaker who has directed the feature documentaries CHOSEN (2022), and JERONIMO (2019).
Early life Joseph Juhn was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when his father was getting a PhD at the University of Minnesota, but moved to South Korea with his family at the age 3. Joseph returned to the United States in 2002 and graduated from University of California, San Diego with a degree in Visual Arts with emphasis in Film and Video, and received a Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law.
Career In 2019, Joseph Juhn directed, produced, and edited a feature documentary, JERONIMO, which won the Audience Choice Best Documentary at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York, and Seattle Asian American Film Festival. The film has also screened at film festivals including the San Diego Asian Film Festival, Asian Film Festival of Dallas, DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, Reel Asian Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, and Diaspora Film Festival, among others. The film also premiered in theaters in South Korea, drawing over 15000 audiences nationwide.
In 2022, Juhn directed and produced another feature documentary, CHOSEN, which is about the five Korean Americans who ran for US Congress in 2020, four of whom were elected into US Congress. The film had a World Premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival, and went to premiere at other film festivals across the United States, including the Asian American International Film Festival in New York, San Diego Asian Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, and Diaspora Film Festival, among others.
Prior to working on JERONIMO full-time, Joseph was an in-house counsel at the Manhattan-based South Korean government agency, KOTRA, for 4 years where he advised Korean companies and entrepreneurs on US intellectual property and startup law. Here, his job revolved primarily around soft IP law, assisting companies draft business strategies around their IP assets while implementing mechanisms to avoid potential IP disputes with US counterparts.
