Dr Joseph Michalski, an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is a geologist and planetary scientist who primarily studies the planet Mars to understand volcanism, climate and the origins of life.

Deputy Director for the Laboratory for Space Research

20 years experience in remote sensing and space exploration, with the research and expertise primarily focused on mineral exploration using remote sensing techniques. [1]

Education

PhD (Geological Sciences), Arizona State University, 2005

MS (Geological Sciences), Arizona State University, 2002

BS (Geology), Bowling Green State University, 1999

Recognition

In 2023, Michalski becomes the first non-Chinese recipient of Xplorer Prize; a non-governmental merit-based award and one of the most generous talent funding programmes for young scientists in China. [2] This award acknowledges his significant contributions to the field of planetary science and the study of Mars. The research centres on Mars' ancient crust, which he believes contains vital information about the origins of life on Earth and pre-plate tectonic processes.[3]

In 2022, Michalski was elected as a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA). [4] This is in recognition of his efforts in forging novel and paradigm-shifting theories about Mars in the areas of volcanism, climate history, and a potential deep biosphere.

, Michalski was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR - Earth4D) [5]

University of Hong Kong Research Output Prize

Marie Curie Fellow

UK Space Agency Aurora Fellow

Bowling Green State University Distinguished Alumni Award

THEMIS Instrument Group Achievement Award
