The Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards are the most prestigious music Awards of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the The Latin Recording Academy. In various years, the Grammy Awards were received by the artists born in Ukraine. As of February 2024, there are only eight artists born in Ukraine who received Grammy Awards since 1958:
- Vladimir Horowitz - Ukrainian and American pianist, one of the most prominent pianists in the world. Born in Kyiv in 1903. He graduated from the conservatory, performing first in the territory of Ukraine, and then in Europe. From 1928 he went to live in the United States. From 1962 to 1989 he received 25 “Grammy” Awards [1]. Horovitz’s last concert was on June 21, 1987 in Hamburg. He died on November 5, 1989 in New York. Since 1995, the International Competition of Young Pianists in Memory of Volodymyr Horovits has been held in Kiev.
- Nathan Milstein - Ukrainian and American violinist. Born in Odesa in 1904. Studied at the Petrograd Conservatory. In 1925, Milstein went on tour to America with Vladimir Horowitz. Musicians have repeatedly performed in the composition of the trio - Horovitz, Milstein, and Piatigorsky. Nathan Milstein won the Grammy in 1975 [2] Nathan Milstein died in London in 1992.
- David Oistrakh - Ukrainian and Soviet violinist, conductor and teacher, People’s Artist of the USSR. Born in Odesa in 1908. David Oistrakh studied violin and alto since the age of 5. Graduated from the Odessa Music and Drama Institute. David Oistrakh received the Grammy Award twice - in 1971 and 1975. He died in October 1974 from a heart attack in Amsterdam, immediately after the concert [3]. In 2003 David Oistrakh was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame.
- Gregor Piatigorsky - Ukrainian, Russian and American cellist. Born in 1903 in the city of Katerinoslav (modern Dnipro). He studied at the Moscow Conservatory. Gregory Piatigorsky won 3 Grammy Awards - in 1962, 1963, 1965 [4] The world’s fame was brought to him in 1929. Gregor Piatigorsky has repeatedly performed at concerts in the White House and in honor of him founded “The Piatigorsky Award”, which is awarded the most talented cellists. The musician died in 1976 in Los Angeles.
- Svyatoslav Richter - Ukrainian and Soviet pianist, winner of numerous awards [5] . He is regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. Born in 1915 in Zhytomyr. He started his music career at the Odessa Philharmonic Theater, and then he graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory. He won 2 Grammy Awards in 1961. It was the first Grammy received by a Soviet performer. In the last years he lived in Paris, where he died on August 1, 1997.
- Nadiya Shpachenko[6] - American pianist and composer of Ukrainian origin was awarded the Grammy in 2020. Nadiya Shpachenko was born in 1977 in Kharkiv and has been engaged in music since she turned 5 years old. In 1991, she moved to Israel with her mother, and in 1994 to the United States.
- Alex Sino[7] - American producer, writer, and artist of Ukrainian origin. Received 2 Latin Grammy Awards in 2023 [8]. He is the only Ukrainian-born Latin Grammy Award Winner. Alex Sino was born in 1957 in Odesa. In 1989 he moved to New York. Alex Sino is a graduate of New York University. Holds a Doctorate (Ph.D.).
- Ruslan Sirota - Israeli and American musician and composer of Ukrainian origin. Received the Grammy in 2011 [9]. Ruslan Sirota was born in 1980 in Uman. Since 4 years he has been playing the guitar, since 7 years he has been playing the piano. In 1990, together with his family, he moved to Israel. He was studying at the Berkeley Music College, and in 2000 he moved to Boston.
