Rica Vina Cruz, popularly known as Dr. Rica Cruz or Doc Rica is a licensed psychologist specializing in sex and relationship therapy in the Philippines. She is also a Board-Certified Sexologist and a Diplomate Board Certified Clinical Sexologist by the American College of Sexologists.[1][2][failed verification][3]

Early and family life

Growing up in a conservative country, such as the Philippines, Cruz received a lot of criticisms and judgment and had been the target of slut-shaming and bullying because of her sexuality and openness in talking about sex and relationships at a young age.[4] She was brought up in a very religious family and noted how a predominantly Catholic culture can censor conversations surrounding sex, which tends to lead to feelings of guilt and shame and perpetuates misinformation.[5][6]

Eventually, Cruz found herself leaving medical school to go to graduate school to answer a research question that has a very personal relevance to her: "How often should a couple have sex for them to be happy?" This was prompted by her "sexless marriage" with her first husband at the time.[5] This started her path to becoming a sex researcher, educator, and therapist in the Philippines. She is now happily partnered and is a mother to two daughters, in a household that can openly and positively discuss sex, sexuality, and relationships.[4][5]

Education

Cruz graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree of Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling Psychology in 2015 and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Clinical Psychology in 2020. She had her specialized training in sex therapy in 2015 at the University of Guelph in Canada.[5][3] She also acquired certifications in sex and relationship therapy from the Cambridge Health Alliance of Harvard Medical School and Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.[1][6][7]

Career

Her psychotherapy practice started in 2015 at the Ateneo Bulatao Center[3] and later established her own private practice to cater to individuals and couples experiencing relationship issues and sex-related concerns.[5] In addition, she served as a lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Psychology from 2015 to 2020.[3][5]

She has been featured in various media platforms as a sex and relationship expert. She is a co-host of the talk show Feelings on One PH, a Filipino teleradio news channel by Cignal TV.[2][3][4][5] She also hosts her own show, Love and Sex with Doc Rica, on the FYE Channel of Kumu where she discusses relevant topics about relationships, intimacy, and sexual health.[8][9]

Cruz is also active in the podcast scene. She launched her own show, Conservative Ako, in 2019 through Pumapodcast, the Philippines' pioneering podcast network.[10] The show, "a show for women, made by women," is the first-ever podcast that talks about female sexuality with a scientific and academic lens.[3][4][10] She also co-hosts The Sexy Minds podcast with Boys’ Night Out’s Tony Toni, where they talk about Filipino sexual experiences and behaviors.[3][4]

Aside from hosting, Cruz also has a column called The Sexy Mind Answers in Tempo News Philippines where she answers readers' frequently asked questions about love, relationships, and sex.[2][11] Cruz also writes articles for Smart Parenting magazine, where she provides professional advice to readers in their Love and Relationships column.[12] She also contributes to lifestyle media website Metro.Style by ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc. and ABS-CBN Corporation.[2]

Cruz is also the CEO of Unprude, a sexual wellness brand that aims to empower women to embrace their sexuality freely and unashamedly.[13][14]

Advocacies

Cruz is a staunch advocate for sexuality education for Filipinos and has participated in campaigns for HIV awareness and family planning.[15] She has also worked with UN Women and other NGOs to address gender-based violence in the country, and to promote gender equality and women's empowerment.[2][16] Through her various platforms, including her podcast, column, and retail brand, Cruz aims to educate and empower Filipinos to take control of their sexual health and well-being.[7][13][14]

Awards and grants

The Society of Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS), one of the leading organizations in the area of sex research, has awarded Cruz with the Inaugural Award for Early Career Professionals in November 2021 for her study titled, “Sexual Pleasure for the Filipino Woman: The Wife, The Mother, and The Slut.” The award provided her a grant to present her research to top sexual science experts and researchers globally.[6][17]
