DescriptionChester Cathedral misericord Hamilton 0146.JPG
Chester Cathedral choir stalls, 1380, detail of a misericord depicting the Madonna and Christ Child with a dove(?) supported by two angels and framed by two pelicans, the symbol of Christ's love for the Church. The pelican (a mythical bird) was said to pluck feathers from its breast and feed its young on its own blood. The artist has depicted the pelican with a short beak, rather like that of an eagle.
