Locomotive BB302 is a locomotive diesel hydraulic made by Henschel factory, West Germany. BB302 started operating in 1970 All BB302 locomotives were allocated to North Sumatra.

The locomotive offers of 670 kW (900 hp). In 1998–2000 rehabilitation was carried out on all units to increase power to895–970 kW (1,200–1,301 hp).

It weighs 44 tonnes (43 long tons; 49 short tons). It is usually used to pull passenger trains or freight trains, including for shunting. Its maximum speed is 80 km/h (22 m/s). It rolls on a B'B' axle, with two bogies, each of which has two drive shafts connected to each other.

This locomotive is the "big brother" of Locomotive BB303. It is the same model (Henschel DHG 1000 BB), but BB302 is heavier (44 tonnes (43 long tons; 49 short tons)) compared to BB303 (428 tonnes (421 long tons; 472 short tons)).

History

Early period (1970–1998)

The BB302 locomotive first operated in 1970 in North Sumatra, older brother of the BB303 locomotive which operated in the same place and also in West Sumatra and on the island of Java. The BB302 locomotive is a unique locomotive because it is endemic to North Sumatra, the only place it operates, with only 6 units.

Over the years, the BB302, together with its siblings namely BB303 and BB306 dominated the railroads in North Sumatra as a towing locomotive for passenger and freight trains. Initially, the BB302 locomotive used the Maybach Mercedes Benz type 12V393TZ10 engine.

End of service (1998)

After 25 years of operation, this locomotive was rehabilitated by changing its engine to MTU.[1] The rehabilitation was carried out in 1998–2000 (along with the BB303 in North Sumatra).

With the arrival of BB203 and CC201 in Divre 1 North Sumatra and Aceh, the role of the BB302 locomotive shifted. BB302 was assigned as a towing locomotive for short to medium distances, sometimes also assigned as shunting locomotives. Out of 6 BB302 units that only operate in North Sumatra, 2 more units are still ready to operate (SO).
