It was founded on December 7, 1922 by Luigi Bianchi, Vito Volterra, and most notably, Salvatore Pincherle, who became the Union's first President. The Italian mathematical union awards the Bartolozzi Prize, the Caccioppoli Prize and the Stampacchia Medal.
