Josiah Schakel (born January 19, 1999) is a Canadian football linebacker for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played U Sports football at Alberta. He has also been a member of the Calgary Stampeders.
Schakel played high school football at Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park, Alberta.[1]
Schakel played U Sports football at Alberta. He won the Presidents' Trophy in 2021 as the top U Sports defensive player.[2][3]
Schakel was selected by the Calgary Stampeders of the of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in the second round, with the 14th overall pick, of the 2022 CFL Draft.[4][5] He signed with the team on May 9, 2022. He was placed on injured reserve several times during the 2022 season.[6] Overall, Schakel played in seven games in 2022, and made one tackle on defense.[7][8] He was released on June 3, 2023.[9]
Schakel was signed to the practice roster of the Edmonton Elks of the CFL on June 26, 2023. He was moved to the active roster on June 28, 2023.[10] He appeared in 15 games in 2023, recording 14 special teams tackles.[8][7] Schakel re-signed with the team on December 1, 2023.[11][12]
