Logan Andrew Basson (born 9 March 1989) is a South African professional rugby union player who last played for Western Province in the Rugby Challenge.[1] He is a utility back that can play as a full-back, winger or fly-half.
As a student at Dale College, he played for the Border Bulldogs at underage level, representing them at the 2005 Under-16 Grant Khomo Week, as well as the 2007 Under-18 Craven Week.
Basson joined the Sharks Academy in 2008 and played for their U-19 team in the 2008 Under-19 Provincial Championship competition.
Basson's first class debut came for Griquas in the 2010 Vodacom Cup. He started three matches for them in the fly-half position towards the end of that competition, scoring eleven points in his debut match against the Leopards,[2] eight points a week later against the Falcons[3] and also played in their narrow 28–24 Quarter Final defeat against former team the Sharks XV.[4]
After a loan spell at the Border Bulldogs (see below), he made seven more appearances for the Griquas during the 2011 Vodacom Cup competition, scoring two tries.
Basson joined the Border Bulldogs on loan[5] for the 2010 Currie Cup First Division season,[6] making ten appearances (including one in a pre-season compulsory friendly match against the Free State Cheetahs) and scoring 87 points, ending fourth in the scoring charts.[7]
Basson joined George-based side the SWD Eagles on loan for the 2011 Currie Cup First Division season,[8] making two appearances.
Basson joined the Border Bulldogs once again in 2012,[9] scoring 23 points in six matches during the 2012 Vodacom Cup and making three starts for them during the 2012 Currie Cup First Division.
In 2013, Basson made seven appearances for Varsity Cup side NMMU Madibaz, helping them to their first semi-final appearance in the competition. However, he missed a crucial penalty in injury time and they lost the match 16–15.[10]
Basson linked up with former team Griquas again during the 2013 Currie Cup Premier Division season, being included on the bench for their final match of the 2013 Currie Cup Premier Division season against the Golden Lions.[11]
In 2014, Basson was included in the Free State XV side that participated in the 2014 Vodacom Cup.[12]
Basson had yet another spell at the Border Bulldogs in 2015, being included in their squad for the 2015 Vodacom Cup.[13]
Basson is the younger brother of Springbok rugby player Bjorn Basson.[14]
