Stakusic is from Mississauga.[1][2] Her father is a Montenegrin who emigrated to Canada at the age of 25, while her mother was born in Canada to parents who emigrated from Serbia.[3] Her brother, Marko Stakusic, is also a professional tennis player. She began playing tennis at the age of five.[3]
She made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the 2022 Championnats de Granby[4] where she recorded her first WTA level main draw win, over Jaimee Fourlis.
Although Stakusic did not play any main draw matches on the tour in 2023,[5] she was named to the Canada Billie Jean King Cup team during the BJK Cup Finals in November 2023. She won three of her four singles matches, all top 60 opponents, and won a deciding match against Martina Trevisan in the final versus Italy, contributing to Canada's first victory in this competition.[3][6]
She qualified for her first WTA 500 tournament at the 2024 San Diego Open and defeated fellow qualifier Marina Melnikova, her second win in only her second main draw at a WTA Tour event.[7] As a result, she reached a new career-high singles ranking of No. 221, on 4 March 2024.
Ranked No. 164, she qualified for the 2024 Wimbledon Championships making her Grand Slam debut.[8][9] As a result, she reached No. 152 in the rankings on 15 July 2024.
Ranked No. 160, she received a wildcard for her home tournament, the WTA 1000 2024 National Bank Open and recorded her first win at this level defeating qualifier Erika Andreeva.[10] She also received a wildcard for the qualifying competition at the 2024 Cincinnati Open.
