Miss You Already is a 2015 British-American comedy-drama film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Morwenna Banks. The film stars Toni Collette, Drew Barrymore, Dominic Cooper, Paddy Considine, Tyson Ritter, Frances de la Tour and Jacqueline Bisset. It was screened in the Gala Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.[3]
Miss You Already follows two best friends, Milly (Toni Collette) and Jess (Drew Barrymore), as they navigate life’s highs and lows. Inseparable since they were young girls, they can’t remember a time they didn’t share everything — secrets, clothes, even boyfriends — but nothing prepares them for the day Milly is hit with life-altering news.
The film is based on Morwenna Banks' radio play Goodbye, which was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4.[7] The project was first announced on February 11, 2012, when Paul Andrew Williams was set to direct and co-wrote the script with Morwenna Banks, Entertainment One had the UK, Canada and Australian rights to the film. Jennifer Aniston was set to star in the film for the lead role.[8] On April 22, 2014, it was announced that Catherine Hardwicke was set to direct the film, which Rachel Weisz and Toni Collette would star as lead actresses, both would play childhood best friends whose relationship got troubled when one gets sick.[4] Hardwicke said about the script,
On September 5, Drew Barrymore was added to the cast and replaced Weisz to portray her part along with Collette, Dominic Cooper, Paddy Considine and Jacqueline Bisset.[5] Cooper and Considine to play husbands of Barrymore and Collette, while Bisset would play Collette's character's mother.[5] On October 3, Tyson Ritter joined the cast of the film to play the love interest of one of the lead female actresses.[6]
Principal photography began on September 7, 2014 in London and later shooting also took place in North York Moors, England. The hospital that features in the film is the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre .[10]
The film has recently sold to several territories, including Germany, France, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.[11]
Miss You Already received mixed to positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 70% rating based on 43 reviews, with an average rating of 6.1/10. The site's consensus states: "Miss You Already isn't shy about going for filmgoers' tear ducts, but its solid script and talented cast are often powerful enough to make up for its more manipulative moments."[12] Metacritic reports a 57 out of 100 rating, based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[13]
