Paava Mannippu (English: Clemency) is a 1963 Tamil Romantic - Social film was directed and Screenplays by A. Bhim Singh. The film produced and story by Buddha Pictures and dialogue were written by M. S. Solaimani respectively. Music by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy assets to the film. It stars Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan M. R. Radha, Savitri and Devika played role to protagonist. The film was dubbed into Telugu as Papa Pariharam.

The story of the film was narrated by Chandra Babu to A. Bhimsingh. Bhimshingh was impressed and decided to make this as the second film of Budhha Pictures(post the success of Pathi Bakthi) and the film was titled Abdulla though many top artiste of that time were considered, finally it was decided to make the film with Chandra Babu as the hero. The film's shooting began with superb songs. After shooting 2, 000 feet with Chandra Babu, the film got stopped as Bhimsingh was facing many issues and was not convinced about the way the film is shaping up and stopped it.

As Bhimsingh was keen to make the story, he had shown the portions shot to M. Saravanan, who asked him to make this film under partnership with AVM. Bhimsingh reworked on the screenplay with this team. Paava Mannippu was produced in association with AVM Productions by A. Bhimsingh's own company Buddha Pictures. Hence, AVM was involved in the film throughout. Bhimsingh then approached Sivaji Ganesan for the lead role, scrapped the film taken till then and reshot it with Sivaji under the new title Paava Mannippu.[2]

Critical Appreciation

The film made in a budget of Rs. 10. 5 Lacs. The base theme is about a person who is born as a Hindu, brought up as a Muslim, marries a Christian girl, this integrating all the major religions of India, which appealed to all the audience. The film stood out for the theme of religious harmony and clemency through top artistes. Sivaji as Raheem scored among the audience along with other artiste. The film's theme is relevant even today.[2]

Music composed by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and lyrics were written by Kannadasan.[3]

Recognition and Awards

The film received the Certificate of Merit for Second Best Film in Tamil at National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for the year 1961.[2]
