Perang Sosoh Pedekik 1949 (literally 1949 Pedekik Sosoh War) is a 2018 Indonesian historical war short film based on Sosoh War in 1949, which took place in Pedekik, a village in Bengkalis. It was produced by MD. Farhan and directed by Musrial Mustafa with a screenplay by Damak Malay, and starring Iskandar Zulkarnain, Alfa Yopie, Khairul Adha, Fathur Rasyid, Asnawi, Busro, and Yanto.

Historical background

On the evening of 9 January 1949, a shootout happen between Indonesian People's Army patrol officers and Dutch patrol officers at the intersection between Pedekik and Kelapapati village which killed one Indonesian soldier.[1] Receiving the report, a group of people began planning resistance against the Dutch army by carrying out an attack in Bengkalis.[1] However, while traveling at 21:00 PM, soldiers from the Indonesian People's Army together with a joint force from the community named fisabilillah led by a Pedekik citizen named Mansur encountered a Dutch patrol troops in a sweet potato garden.[2] Due to distance between the two troops were very close, a firefight broke out, resulting in fighting and killing many victims on both sides.[1] To commemorate the war, a memoir was build in Pedekik which was later named Pedekik War Monument.[3]

Perang Sosoh Pedekik was produced by MD. Farhan and directed by Musrial Mustafa, the creator of "Negeri Junjungan", who also co-wrote the screenplay.[4]

In August 2016, a discussion was held on the eve of the state kenduri, a village youth activity in Pedekik, to discuss the event of making village history into a film.[4] From the discussion, it was agreed that the village history that would be made into a film was the Sosoh War with the aim of being a pioneer in the movement to make history as an audio and visual work so that it could be enjoyed by the public in the future.[4]

On 5 August 2018, the first shooting process for the film was carried out after two years of planning.[4] The shooting was carried out at night at Mbah Ikhsan's house which is located right in front of the Fisabilillah mosque after starting with the reading of the Dalimi prayer together at 20:30 PM which was performed by the crew and actors, the majority of whom were local village residents.[4] In carrying out the shooting process of Perang Sosoh Pedekik 1949, was carried out in a long process that required in collecting data, characters, shooting locations, time settings, costumes and other props so it fit in accordance with the historical events.[4]

Release and reception

Perang Sosoh Pedekik 1949 was released on 26 August 2018 and was screened at Nurul Jadid Islamic middle school in Pedekik during the evening of national holiday night.[5] The film attracted the attention of audiences consisting of people of all ages and drew loud cheers from residents when it premiered at 20:30 PM.[5] The film also invites curiosity from people who want to experience the atmosphere of resistance and battle in expelling the Dutch colonialists from Bengkalis.[5] The film director, Musrial Mustafa, received a positive review for his work in the film.[5]
