On April 19, 2024, at around 1:50 pm ET, Maxwell Azzarello, a 37-year-old man from St. Augustine, Florida,[1] self-immolated outside of the New York courthouse where jurors were being chosen for the New York state criminal trial of former U.S. President Donald Trump.[1][2][3] Azzarello was a conspiracy theorist, and posted a manifesto to his Substack before the incident.[4] He traveled from his Florida home to New York just days before the trial.[5] Before setting himself on fire, Azzarello threw leaflets into the air. He had also protested with signs the day before and gave an interview critical of the American government.[1] Officers arrived after a few minutes and extinguished the blaze before he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.[1] He is currently in critical condition.[1] He believed Trump and Biden were preparing a "fascist coup."
