Silvanoshei is the son of Alhana Starbreeze, the Silvanesti princess, and Porthios Kanan, the Qualinesti prince, both considered by their people to be dark elves. Silvan traveled with his mother following his father's disappearance in Qualinesti. He was kept from learning anything of battle, and was always hidden away during battles. As such, he had no respect from his mother's soldiers, especially from her second-in-command, Samar.

During the storm that raged across Krynn marking the beginning of the War of Souls, Silvan, instead of being scared of it, rejoiced in it. On that same night, ogres attacked his mother's camp, and he drew an ornamental and impractical sword that he had bought in the last city they were in. During the battle he sliced open Samar's arm by accident while drawing the blade. His mother is angered, however, for the first time Samar shows some pride for him. He is given the task of running to the Legion of Steel fortress and calling for their aid against the ogres. En route, a fallen tree was struck by lighting, blasting him away and knocking him unconsious. He fell next to the shield, and unbeknownst to all, the dragon Cyan Bloodbane, who at the time was posing as an elf named Glaucous let Silvan through. Though Cyan thought that this had been his idea his thoughts had been led by Takhisis, who was at the time known as the One God.

He meets up with the kirath, a Silvanesti border patrol. They agree to take him to Silvanost, the capital of Silvanesti. They plan to overthrow the rule of the regent, General Konnal. He arrives with a fanfare and a celebration, and is made Speaker of the Stars. However, Konnal and his advisor, the charming mage Glacous, still control the nation. Silvanoshei then decides to take control. He then discovers that the Dark Knights, led by Mina, have infiltrated the shield. He takes to the field with the army and is given the task of capturing her. When he sees her, he is immediately smitten with her. Though, he does capture her, he later offers to free her out of his love.

Finding his love unreturned, he receives a ring that he believes was sent by his mother. However it was in fact sent by Lord of the Night, Morham Targonne. He also believes the ring is supposed to make her love him, however, when he gives it to her, she is poisoned and appears dead. In fact, this had all been part of her plan. Upon her funeral pyre, she apparently returns to life, though in fact she was held in stasis by a potion. She accuses Targonne of her murder and has him beheaded. Following this, she uses her clerical power to reveal the elf, Glacous, for what he really is: the green dragon, Cyan Bloodbane. The dragon had long hated the elves, and Mina rouses the elves to slay him. After this, Silvan is granted the power by the One God to uproot the shield tree, thus lowering the shield above Silvanesti and allowing the Dark Knights to conquer it.

Silvan went on a search to find Mina that led him to Sanction. Mina still does not return his love. He becomes a prisoner, but his love blinds him from that fact and he thinks he is only being protected. During the battle with Malystryx, dragonfear overwhelmes the jailer so much so that he allows Silvanoshei to escape. Silvan later appears at the Temple of Duerghast, where he is witness to Takhisis's downfall. As she is about to kill Mina, he throws a broken dragonlance at Takhisis in order to save his love, which pierces her heart. Mina slays him in retribution. He was buried in the Tomb of the Last Heroes in Solace, though his mother hoped to one day bury him in Silvanesti.
