Search engines may also put penalties so keyword stuffing can backfire. If a word is repeated many times, that site might get penalty and get lower rank.
I've noticed that in sites like Youtube, users will add a large amount of unrelated, but popularly searched terms to the description of their videos to generate more hits, and to appear more often on the "related videos" sidebar.
