Year Month Day Cases and Deaths Responses
2019 November 17 The first known case was retrodated in a Chinese government report to the 17th of November, but was not recognized at the time.[1]
December 31 China contacts the WHO and informs them of "cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology (unknown cause) detected in Wuhan"[2]
2020 January 16 The Swedish Public Health Agency puts forth a press release that it is monitoring the spread of novel coronavirus (nCOV) said to have spread from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, in Hubei province, China. The risk of spread to Sweden is described as "very low".[3]
31 Sweden confirmed the first case of COVID-19. A woman in her 20s, returning from Wuhan on 24 January, tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and was admitted at Ryhov Region Hospital in Jönköping.[4][5] Having isolated herself voluntarily at home upon arriving in Sweden she was deemed not to have posed any transmission risk during travel or during her initial days in Sweden.[5] The local university college of Jönköping, stated at the time that it had around 200 Chinese exchange students, responding that the woman may have been a student.[6][7] The woman was declared asymptomatic, but not fully discharged from healthcare services after over one month of care on 3 March.[8] However, viral fragments continued to be detectable with transmission of live viral particles being deemed unlikely.[8]
February 9 A Chinese Lantern Festival in Jönköping was cancelled in response to the first case imported from Wuhan roughly a week previously.[9]
17 The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against all trips to the Hubei province in China, as well as non-essential travel to the rest of China apart from Hong Kong and Macao.[10]
26 Following the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy, a 30-year-old man fell ill three days after returning from northern Italy. He tested positive for the virus, and was admitted to Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg.[11][5]
27 Five new cases were confirmed.[12] Västra Götaland Region confirmed that three people in their 30s had tested positive in Gothenburg. Two of them had been in contact with the 30-year-old patient hospitalized the previous day, and one was deemed to have contracted the virus in Italy.[13][14]

Stockholm Region confirmed that one individual who had tested positive for the virus after returning from Iran was admitted to Karolinska University Hospital for isolation.[15] Uppsala Region confirmed that a woman who had traveled to Germany on a business trip, and met with an Italian colleague, had sought medical attention after showing flu-like symptoms. She tested positive and was admitted to Uppsala University Hospital.[16]

The employer's organisation Almega advised its members to stay at home from work for two weeks if they had visited corona risk areas. According to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency ('Försäkringskassan') the employee can receive quarantine allowance ('smittbärarpenning') if the person has a medical certificate.[17]

t On 2 March the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against trips to Iran, due to the uncontrolled spread of the Covid-19 in the country.[18] The Swedish Transport Board also revoked Iran Airs permit for Iranian flights to land in Sweden from the same date.[19]

28 Four new cases were confirmed.[20][21] Jönköping Region confirmed that a man in his 50's had tested positive, and been admitted to Ryhov Region Hospital. He had returned to Sweden from Northern Italy on 24 February, and begun feeling ill 25 February.[22]

Stockholm Region confirmed two positive cases related to the previous individual who had returned from Iran. They were also admitted to Karolinska University Hospital for isolation.[23] Uppsala Region confirmed that an individual who had returned from Iran tested positive for the virus, and was in home quarantine.[24]

29 Two new cases were confirmed, one in Västra Götaland, and one in Stockholm.[25]
March 1 One new case was confirmed in Västra Götaland.[26]
2 One new case was confirmed in Stockholm.[27]
3 15 new cases were confirmed: ten in Stockholm, three in Västra Götaland, one in Scania and one in Jönköping.[28][29]

One of the Stockholm cases was a student at Stockholm University, Campus Kista.[30] One of the cases in Scania was a student from Lund University,[31] living at one of the student dormitories.[32]

The Scandinavian airline SAS stopped all flights to northern Italy, in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus.[33]
4 22 new cases were confirmed; 16 in Stockholm, two each in Västra Götaland and Värmland, and one each in Scania and Örebro.[34]

One of the Stockholm cases is a student at Campus Manilla in Djurgården, Stockholm. Princess Estelle Bernadotte is a student at Campus Manilla, but the Royal Court states she is not the infected student.[35]

The Public Health Agency of Sweden ('Folkhälsomyndigheten') expanded testing for Covid-19 beyond only those who have been in risk areas abroad, to also test cases of pneumonia without known cause.[36]
5 42 new cases were confirmed; 28 in Stockholm, seven in Scania, three in Värmland, two in Uppsala, and one each in Västra Götaland and Gävleborg.[37][38][39][40]

Of the five reported Värmland cases to date, one is a staff at Internationella Engelska Skolan in Karlstad and one is an employee at TietoEVRY in Karlstad.[41]

6 42 new cases were confirmed; two in Västra Götaland,[42] five in Scania,[43] eight in Värmland,[44] one in Uppsala,[45] five in Jönköping,[46] 21 in Stockholm,[47] and one in Gävleborg.[48] Deputy Sveriges Riksbank governor Martin Flodén tested positive on 6 March following a trip to Italy.[49] One of the Jönköping cases is a school bus driver in Gislaved municipality[50] and one of the Värmland cases is a staff at Myndigheten för Samhällsskydd och Beredskap (MSB).[41] The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against all non-necessary travel to the city of Daegu and the province of Gyeongbuk in South Korea.[51]

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against all non-necessary trips to northern Italy, specifically the regions of Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Trentino-Alto Adige, Valle d'Aosta, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Marche and Toscana.[52] Turin, Milan, Venice, Verona, Trieste and Florence are large cities in these regions. The Public Health Agency of Sweden, who initiated the recommendation for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, states that the decision is based solely on the strain of the Italian health care system.[53]

The same day, Swedish National Broadcaster SVT held a crisis meeting to consider broadcasting the live finals of Melodifestivalen 2020 on 7 March without an audience, as a response to the growing outbreak. The Danish equivalent had recently decided to broadcast Their version of the finals without an audience. Ultimately, SVT decided to allow the audience to enter the arena, although they advised people who felt sick to stay at home.[54]

7 24 new cases were confirmed; three in Scania,[55] and 21 in Stockholm.[56]

In the morning it was reported that all previous cases in Stockholm Region were travel-related or travel-related person-to-person spread.[57] Screening for coronavirus is included in a statistical sample of patients where routine testing for seasonal influenza is performed.[58]

It was reported that one of the cases confirmed on 6 March in Stockholm had sought care at Danderyd Hospital in the Stockholm region on 5 March, and was initially not adequately isolated. The person had caught the virus abroad, but outside known risk areas (at the time South Korea, China, Iran and Northern Italy).[59][60] Contact tracing has begun, with the case marking the second instance of transmission to Sweden from a non-risk area.[60]

The Gothenburg hotel Clarion Hotel Post chose to let 25 of its 200 employees go, as a response to falling demand due to the virus.[61]
8 One new case was confirmed in Uppsala region,[62] five in Scania region,[63] 12 in Västra Götaland,[64] seven in Värmland,[65] three in Örebro[66] and 14 in Stockholm region.[67]

To date, Stockholm region states that of the 115 confirmed cases in the region, 101 people have been infected in Italy or through contact with a person who has visited Italy, 8 cases have been infected in Iran or through contact with a person who has visited Iran, one person has been infected in another European country, and five cases are still under investigation.[67] One of the Örebro cases confirmed this day is believed to have caught the virus on a trip back from the US, which he/ she arrived back from approximately a week ago. The other two persons are related to this person. Contact tracing has begun around this case,[66] which is the third case of transmission to Sweden from a non-risk area. The Uppsala case is a senior high school student at Celsiusskolan in Uppsala.[68] The Stockholm region press office did not report cases detected on the afternoon of the 8th, instead reporting an additional 32 cases on the 9th.[69] One of the Örebro cases is reported to have visited an open house at the Örebro University on 4 March. Örebro region advises any attendees to be attentive to if symptoms arise.[70]

A preschool in Hisings Backa, Gothenburg, decided to close for two weeks due to an infected person having been on the premises. The preschool has not said whether the infected person is a child or one of the staff. Children and staff have all been ordered to quarantine themselves at home by Smittskydd Västra Götaland, and the preschool is undergoing a deep clean. The preschool has five staff.[71]

On the same date, approx. 15 health care staff at Danderyd Hospital were quarantined after having been in contact with a patient on 5 March who arrived by ambulance to the emergency unit. The patient had not been to a high-risk area and was not initially suspected to have Covid-19, but when the patients health deteriorated hospital staff decided to test the patient for the virus, which showed the person was infected.[72]

9 Five cases were confirmed in Halland (the first in the region),[73] one in Värmland,[74] seven in Västra Götaland,[75] two in Jönköping,[76] two in Uppsala,[77] and 32 in Stockholm (all of which had been confirmed the previous day).[69][69][78] A first case of Covid-19 was also reported in Sörmland,[79] a first case in Norrbotten,[80] five first cases in Västerbotten[81] and one first case in Östergötaland.[82]

The first Halland case is an elementary school student at Särö school in Kungsbacka who had travelled to northern Italy.[83]

On the same date, Värmland had a total of 21 cases, of which 20 had visited northern Italy, and 19 of these were connected to the same bus tour. One case has been infected in the Netherlands. One of the Värmland cases is a teacher at Norrstrandsskolans junior high school.[84] One of the 21 cases is admitted to Karlstad hospital. The majority of the cases are from the Karlstad area.[74] Further, six new cases were confirmed in Västra Götaland, of which two are in the Skaraborg area.[85]

On the same date, the first community transmissions were detected in Sweden. Two persons in the Stockholm area who had no known connection to any of the risk areas or an infected person, were found to be infected, both patients at St. Göran Hospital since Friday 6 March in two different wards.[86] Both cases have been transferred to Huddinge Hospital for further investigation.[87]

One of the cases in Västra Götaland was a patient at Kungälv Hospital with signs of respiratory symptoms since approx. a week who was tested for Covid-19 after the decision of the Public Health Agency of Sweden on 4 March. This patient was tested on Sunday 8 March and confirmed positive a day later. The patient was immediately transferred to Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the affected ward at the Kungälv Hospital has been closed for patient admission. Highly exposed staff at Kungälv Hospital have been told to stay home for a while, and contact tracing has begun.[88]

The Health Care Management ('Hälso- och sjukvårdsledningen') in Värmland decided that all health care staff that have visited northern Italy or other high-risk areas (current and future as announced by the Public Health Agency of Sweden) are to self-quarantine for 14 days due to vulnerable patients they may meet in their line of work. The decision is also based on incidents of transmission from health care staff to patients in China, Norway and the United States. An estimate of the number of affected health care staff was not publicly available by this date. Where possible, affected staff are encouraged to work from home and in cases where this is not possible the staff are suspended from work on medical grounds but will maintain salary benefits.[89]

On the same date, approx. 30-40 health care staff at St. Göran Hospital in Stockholm were quarantined after having cared for a Covid-19 infected patient. Another patient at the same hospital has been tested and is awaiting results. The hospital immediately went into a state of readiness to handle the situation.[87]

10 Three cases were reported in Scania,[90] 60 in the Stockholm region,[91] 15 in Västra Götaland,[92] two first cases in Sörmland region,[93] one first case in Jämtland[94] and first three cases in Västernorrland region.[95]Stockholm region announced this day that two of the 207 infected cases in the region were in intensive care.[91] One of these patients is a patient from the intensive care unit at Södersjukhuset Hospital whom was confirmed infected on Monday 9 March, and immediately moved to Karolinska University Hospital for further isolated intensive care. The patient has relatives whom have recently travelled in Europe, but the hospital announces it is too early to determine whether the patient has been infected by this person. Contact tracing has begun and Södersjukhuset Hospital has gone into a state of readiness to handle the situation and are trying to identify people who may have been exposed to the virus.[96] In the Stockholm region, a total of ten patients have been hospitalised.[97] One of the Stockholm cases is a judge at the Svea Court of Appeal who was infected on a trip abroad, although not a risk area. Due to this, the court has told 25 staff to self-quarantine and some hearings have been postponed.[98]

In Västra Götaland region, one patient is considered critically ill but stable.[97]

The Södersjukhuset Hospital in Stockholm went into a state of readiness after an ICU patient was confirmed to have Covid-19. The patient was transferred to Karolinska University Hospital for further isolated intensive care. It is not known whether the patient got the virus from a relative traveling in Europe and whether the patient has infected staff or patients. Approx. 70 staff have been in contact with the patient but the hospital administration has decided to allow them to continue working until they show symptoms of infection.[99] This decision has received internal criticism from staff of not being forceful enough.[100]

On the same date, the Public Health Agency of Sweden raised the level of risk of the virus spreading from "high" to "very high", which is the highest level. This comes after news that there are indications of ongoing local transmission in the Stockholm and Västra Götaland area.[101][102]

At the same time, the agency advised everyone with respiratory infection, even mild ones, to refrain from social contacts in private and working life- where there is a risk of spreading the virus. They also ask health care staff in nursing homes and caring of elderly to not work if they have any symptoms of respiratory infection. Relatives of elderly should also avoid unnecessary visits at hospitals and in facilities for elderly and never visit if there are any respiratory symptoms.[103]

After this announcement, Blekinge Health Care Region enforced a total ban on visits by family members and friends at health care and elderly establishments and hospitals in the region.[104] Region Värmland enforced a similar ban on all visits to hospitals and health care establishments in the region.[105]

After the announcement of the Public Health Agency of Sweden to protect the elderly and the frail, Stockholm Region decided to change their strategy for testing for COVID-19 to mainly focus on the very ill and not just people who had visited risk areas.[106] Danderyd Hospital also went into a state of readiness due to the situation of the Covid-19 spread in Stockholm.[107]

11 144 new infected cases were reported. Blekinge, Dalarna, and Västmanland reported their first cases; one, one and four respectively. The first death was reported, in Stockholm, a person in the 70s, believed to have been infected through community approx. spread a week earlier.[108] The government also determined that testing should be limited to people who are perceived to be at greatest risk.[109]

Note: On 11 March Stockholm region decided to only test hospitalised patients from risk groups and health care staff with symptoms. Other regions will follow suit within the coming week. This means the data on the Public Health Agency of Swedens website is not reflecting the actual infected persons in the country since local transmission has been ongoing since at least early March.[110][111][112] Due to this, and the large increase in infected persons, the timeline will not be updated as above on a daily basis.

This means the data on the Public Health Agency of Swedens website is not reflecting the actual infected persons in the country, since local transmission has been ongoing since at least early March.[110][111][112]

The same date, Södertälje Hospital went into a state of readiness due to the situation in Stockholm region.[106]

The government has banned all gatherings larger than 500 people, under threat of fines and a six-month prison sentence.[113]

The same date, the government announced that the qualifying day of sickness ('karensdag') will be temporarily abolished in order to ensure that people feeling slightly ill will stay at home from work. This means that the state will pay sick pay allowance from the first day the employee is absent from work. The decision is effective as of 11 March 2020 and is believed to reduce the virus spreading as well as the burden on the health care system.[114]

12 Gotland identified the first two infected persons on the island; two non-related men who had returned from travel to risk-areas abroad.[115]
13 The government decided to temporarily abolish the demand of a doctor's certificate for 14 days for people staying home from work due to illness (i.e. sick pay period). Previously a doctor's certificate was needed after seven days.[116]

The Public Health Agency of Sweden also declared the same date that stopping the spread of Covid-19 has entered a "new phase" which requires "other efforts". The continued focus is now to delay spread among the population and to protect the elderly and most vulnerable against the disease.[117] On the same date, 814 persons in Sweden had been confirmed sick with Covid-19. Stockholm region has since 11 March only tested persons from risk groups and health care staff with symptoms.[110] On 12 March, Scania region decided to do the same, and the other regions in Sweden will follow suit within a week.[111][112]

On the same date, media reported that there is a shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE) for health care staff, and hospitals in Stockholm have been forced to reuse disposable PPEs after sanitation. The regional Health Care Director warned about this scenario in early March and government agencies have temporarily waived the public procurement law in order to hastily procure more supplies.[118] The National Board of Health and Welfare ('Socialstyrelsen') confirmed that there is no preparedness storage and nothing to distribute to the health care sector.[119][120]

14 The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against all non-necessary trips abroad, in other words visits and tourist travel. The recommendation is valid until at least 14 April, when a new decision will be taken.[121]
15
16 The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommended that people over 70 should limit close contact with other people, and employers should recommend their employees work from home.[122]
17 The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommended that secondary schools and universities use distance learning.[123]
18
19 The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommended that people avoid unnecessary weekend trips within Sweden[124]
20
21
22
23 The country exceeded more than 2,000 cases which was the second milestone in only one week since the country reached 1,000 cases on the 15 March 2020. Death toll hit the record of 10 deaths in one day.
24 New restrictions are put in by the government only allowing restaurants to serve customers at a table, not allowing serving at a bar or other types of serving where many people are close to each other. Restaurants are also recommended to place tables further away from each other. Disease control holds the power together with responsible municipalities to close down businesses that do not follow the regulations [125]
