The term "belief in global warming" can mean:

1. belief that some amount of global warming has occurred during a specific part of the Modern Warming Period
   • such as from 1850 to present
   • or from 1950 to present
2. belief that such warming has occurred and that a significant amount was caused by human activity
3. belief that more than half was caused by human activity

It is not always clear what a statement means when it uses this phrase in reference to an individual or class of individuals. Ambiguity can arise when two different statements use different meanings.

Some individuals have attempted to clear up the ambiguity. For example, Tim Ball said:

• "When people say we don't believe in Global Warming. I say no, I believe in Global Warming. I don't believe that human CO2 is causing that warming." [I believe in Global Warming. I don't believe that human CO2 is causing that warming]
