Jacky Shack Enook Saul (born 28 September 1983) is a man who was convicted of murdering an Australian women in Vanuatu in 2008. Prior to his conviction, Saul escaped from jail and was recaptured three times.

Crime

Lyndall Jacques, a 69-year-old Australian expatriate living in Vanuatu, was found dead at her home in Port Vila on 7 January 2008. Her throat had been slit and she had been hit on the head with a blunt object. Her home had also been robbed.[1]

Saul became the primary suspect in the killing after witnesses reported that he had been seen near Jacques's house on 6 January. Saul had been Jacques's gardener, but he had been sacked about a year prior to Jacques's death. Saul had attempted to confront Jacques at her house several times since his sacking.[1]

Arrests and escapes

Saul was arrested on 18 January after a two-week manhunt in the wilderness bush of Efate. Upon being captured, he charged with theft, unlawful entry, sexual intercourse without consent, and premeditated intentional homicide. On 26 February 2008, Saul escaped from the Port Vila Correctional Service Centre.[2] Saul fled to his parents' house, but they notified the police and Saul surrendered himself. Saul claimed that he escaped because he was not being fed enough in the jail.[3]

Just days after he was re-captured, Saul again escaped from prison; he escaped by threatening the unarmed prison guards with an axe he obtained while on kitchen duty in the corrections centre.[4][5] A few days later, 20 other prisoners escaped from the same facility.[4] Saul was recaptured in July 2008 when he was found at his girlfriend's house.[6]

As a result of the escapes, the police took control of the Port Vila Correctional Service Centre, which had previously been controlled by civilian government employees. Nevertheless, on 19 September 2008, Saul escaped from the facility for the third time.[7] Saul and an accomplice threatened the guards with bush knives and escaped by crawling under the razor wire fence.[7] He was recaptured in October 2008.[citation needed]

Trial and conviction

In 2008, Saul was convicted of the murder of Lyndall Jacques and sentenced to 19 years' imprisonment.[8]
