BitShares is a decentralised autonomous company or DAC. The BitShares Decentralised Exchange is the primary offering of BitShares, where Market Pegged Assets or bitAssets are traded. BitAssets are cryptocurrencies that run on the BitShares network which track the price of real world currencies and commodities. BitShares uses its underlying network unit, BTS, as collateral to back bitAssets allowing them to remain pegged to their target asset. BitUSD is a bitAsset and is known as the first cryptocurrency to have a stable value of $1 per unit. Commonly referred to as a Bitcoin 2.0 project, BitShares uses blockchain technology to secure a decentralised ledger. A consensus algorithm developed by BitShares co-founder Daniel Larimer known as delegated proof-of-stake or DPOS is used to secure the blockchain.
