Son Goku (Japanese: 孫 悟空, Hepburn: Son Gokū), better known as simply Goku, is an eccentric, monkey-tailed man who practices martial arts and possesses various superhuman abilities. He meets Bulma and joins her on a journey to find the wish-granting Dragon Balls.
Initially believed to be an Earthling, he is later revealed to be a member of an extraterrestrial warrior race called the Saiyans with the birth name Kakarrot (カカロット, Kakarotto). As Goku matures, he becomes one of the universe's mightiest warriors and protects his adopted home planet, Earth, from villains who wish to harm it. Goku is depicted as carefree and cheerful when at ease but quickly serious and strategic-minded when fighting. Through concentration, Goku can harness Qi--the vital life force that flows through all life forms, to augment his physical and mental capabilities to perform supernatural feats, the most prominent being his signature Kamehameha technique. Through years of experience and training, Goku has achieved feats that have been surpassed only by a few.
Goku first appears in Dragon Ball as a monkey-tailed child adopted by the hermit Gohan. Before the series' narrative begins, he accidentally and unknowingly kills Gohan on a full-moon night when he temporarily transforms into the mighty Ōzaru (大猿, lit. "Great Ape") after staring at a full moon. However, Goku loses the ability when his friends cut off his tail. Living alone with an item known as a Dragon Ball which he keeps as a memento of Gohan, Goku befriends a teenage girl named Bulma. He joins her to find the seven Dragon Balls, which, when gathered, summon the wish-granting dragon Shenlong. They encounter the desert bandit Yamcha and two shapeshifters named Oolong and Puar, who also join their quest. Goku is later trained by the martial artist Kame-Sen'nin, alongside a Shaolin monk named Kuririn, who becomes his best friend. It is Kame-Sen'nin who gives Goku the magic cloud Kinto'un (as a reward for saving his pet sea turtle), which becomes Goku's primary source of flight travel across the world. Goku's first shown martial arts attack as a child is Jan ken (ジャン拳), three physical blows modeled after the hand signs in rock-paper-scissors. As a child, he also wields the Nyoi-bō (如意棒, lit. "Mind Stick", renamed "Power Pole" in Funimation's dub), a magic staff that extends and retracts on command; given to him by his late grandfather. However, Goku's signature attack is the Kamehameha wave, a technique learned from Kame-Sen'nin. The Kamehameha is a concentration of Ki, released as a concussive beam. Kame-Sen'nin spent about 50 years developing and perfecting the technique, but, as a child, Goku is able to understand and copy the technique immediately after only one demonstration. After training with the Earth's god, Kami, Goku learns to fly by virtue of the technique Bukū-jutsu (舞空術, lit. "Air Dance Technique") and uses the Kinto'un less frequently for flight travel. While participating in the Tenkaichi Budōkai (天下一武道会?, lit. "Strongest Under the Heavens Martial Arts Tournament") that attracts the most powerful fighters in the world, Goku battles foes, later turned allies, such as Tenshinhan and Chaozu, as well as the Namekian Piccolo. After becoming the runner-up champion of the 21st and 22nd tournaments, Goku finally wins in the 23rd with Piccolo's defeat, and marries Chi-Chi soon after.
Five years later, Goku meets his evil older brother Raditz and sacrifices himself to defeat Raditz after he learns about his heritage. Goku comes from a race of extraterrestrials called Saiyans (サイヤ人 Saiya-jin?), himself having been sent from their home planet to prepare Earth for sale on the intergalactic market by destroying all its life. While Grandpa Gohan was taking care of him, Goku suffered a severe head injury and forgets his mission to conquer Earth. In order to fight the Saiyans invading Earth, Goku trains with Kaiō-sama in the after-life. He teaches Goku the Kaiō-ken (界王拳, lit. "World King Fist"), which multiplies his ki and strength for an instant, but with possible strain to the body. It is also from Kaiō-sama that Goku learns his most powerful attack: the Genki-Dama (元気玉, lit. "Energy Sphere", renamed "Spirit Bomb" in Funimation's dub), an energy sphere created by gathering ki from surrounding animals, nature and humans. After being revived by the Dragon Balls, Goku faces off with the Saiyan prince Vegeta, who eventually becomes another ally. On his journey to Planet Namek in order to aid his friends in gathering the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive the ones killed by the Saiyans, Goku fights the galactic tyrant Freeza, who destroyed the Saiyans' home planet and nearly the entire race. During his epic battle with Freeza, Goku becomes the first Saiyan in a thousand years to transform into a Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人 Sūpā Saiya-jin).
After defeating Freeza and barely escaping the destruction of Namek, Goku learns a teleportation skill called Shunkan Idō (瞬間移動, lit. "Instant Teleport", renamed "Instant Transmission" in Funimation's dub), taught by the inhabitants of the planet Yardrat. However, Goku contracts a heart virus whereof the time-traveler Trunks warns him, but recovers after taking medicine provided by Trunks. Later, Goku trains his first son Gohan to be his successor and sacrifices himself again during the battle against the evil life-form Cell. Goku is temporarily resurrected on Earth seven years later and meets his second son Goten. Goku also battles Vegeta again after Vegeta falls under the control of the wizard Bobbidi. Shortly after, he is drawn into a battle for the universe against the monster Majin Boo. Despite having mastered two new Super Saiyan transformations, Goku teaches Goten and Trunks to take his place. Goku attempts to fuse with Gohan in order to defeat Boo, but this fails when the latter is absorbed by Boo, and so he persuades the newly arrived Vegeta to fuse with him, creating Vegetto (ベジット Bejitto, "Vegerot" in Viz Media's manga translation). Eventually, Goku destroys Boo with a Genki-Dama attack. Ten years later, during another Tenkaichi Budōkai with fighters from all over the world, Goku meets Oob, Boo's human reincarnation, and leaves with him, intending to train him as the new protector of Earth.
After defeating Boo, Goku meets a new opponent known as Beerus, the God of Destruction. An alternative, more innately powerful form called Super Saiyan God (超サイヤ人ゴッド Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo) is reached by Goku in the canonical film Battle of Gods. Though the temporary transformation wears off, Goku manages to harness its godly powers in his base form. In its sequel film Resurrection 'F', Goku manages to achieve a blue-haired evolution of Super Saiyan God under Whis's tutelage, known as the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人ゴッドSS(スーパーサイヤ人ゴッドスーパーサイヤ人) Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo Sūpā Saiya-jin). These forms also appeared in Dragon Ball Super and its manga tie-in, which is being overseen by Akira Toriyama himself. Afterwards, Goku and his friends participate in another fighting tournament but set between two Gods of Destruction. Although Goku gives up after fighting his opponent, Hit, his team ends up winning the tournament.
Being a Saiyan, Goku possesses a superb physiology capable of tremendous physical activity, and through rigorous training, he has acquired and refined many extraordinary skills and abilities. His tremendous martial arts prowess, combined with his natural Saiyan athleticism, has enabled Goku to achieve incredible feats of strength, speed, agility, and durability. In fact, on numerous occasion, Goku has shown his capability to anticipate and respond to movements and attacks that would normally be beyond the best fighters in the universe. In one situation in particular, when his energy attack was instantaneously re-positioned merely 5 inches behind him using magic, Goku managed to, not only, turn and identify the threat, but dodge the projectile completely. (Considering that the projectile was traveling 2,500 feet per second, this feat would require Goku to act in less than a ten-thousandth of a second.)
Goku employs various martial forms, most of which usually incorporate specialized weaponry, though Goku is most adept at using the daibo – banded lengths of wood used to crack skulls and whirled to deflect attacks. As a child, Goku wielded the Nyoi-bō (如意棒, lit. "Mind Stick", renamed "Power Pole" in Funimation's English anime dub), a magic staff that extends and retracts on command, given to him by his Grandfather. Goku's first means of conveyance is a magic cloud called Kinto'un (筋斗雲, lit. "Somersault Cloud", renamed "Nimbus" in Funimation's English anime dub), given to him by Kame-Sen'nin in return for saving his pet sea turtle. After training with Kami, he learns to fly by virtue of the technique Bukū-jutsu (舞空術, lit. "Air Dance Technique") and uses the cloud less frequently.
Goku accomplishes many of his greater feats by drawing upon his inner reserves of Qi. And like all Saiyans, Goku builds up stronger, more intense reserves of Qi the longer he remains engaged in combat. He can expend these reserves in amazing maneuvers – disorienting multiple foes, knocking groups back, or dashing in and out of melee; trading massive expenditures of this force to execute amazing moves, including monster-slaying finishing strikes. Goku’s melee attacks become increasingly potent when used in careful succession; they generate additional spiritual energy, deal increased damage and produce unique effects that can enable him to defeat nearly any enemy. Goku can even make the force of his spirit manifest, projecting it outward with a mantra, a long-lasting mantle of power which can heal or strengthen the projecting warrior or any nearby allies. Among his allies, Goku possesses peerless tactical mobility and agility on the battlefield; able to quickly move between or around enemies, flanking them or striking at their vitals as the situation demands, and defense-focused monks are more adept at dodging enemy attacks than any other class. Goku's dedication to physical perfection and martial skill is evident in his mastery of this resource, leaving him free to deliver as many empowered strikes as his Qi pools will allow – without waiting for ability.
Over his many exploits, Goku has developed and acquired many arcane abilities and techniques such as sensing mystic or divine energy, particularly that which is related to cosmic-level entities. He is capable of fusing his consciousness with that of another person, enabling each to perceive the other's emotions and memories. He has phenomenal superhuman level eyesight and his entire body is oriented to combat; enabling him to adapt to any environment with minimal exposure. At times, he has absorbed energy directed at himself and channeled it to augment his own power. Under certain circumstances, he can even focus his chi to create nexus points between dimensions.
Minato Namikaze
Due to his exploits with this technique, Minato Namikaze gained the moniker of "Konoha's Yellow Flash" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō). Minato most commonly applied the formula in advance to his special kunai, which he would scatter all over the battlefield when a fight commenced, so that they could be teleported to at any time. Using such tactics, Konohagakure even proved victorious in a battle against Iwagakure during the Third Shinobi World War, despite already being vastly outnumbered by appearing randomly into the enemy's lines, using his great speed to seemingly be in several places at once and wipe out entire squadrons before they could even react. With his great reflexes, he could use the Flying Thunder God — Second Step to teleport at short-range, allowing him simultaneously dodge an attack and strike at the opponent's blindside.
This technique — combined with Minato's prodigious natural speed and reflexes made him the fastest ninja to ever live according to A. The technique is fast enough to even allow Minato to escape being warped away, despite having already been partially sucked in, and dodge A's top-speed attack. Minato could also incorporate the formula into other seals, such as that of his wife, allowing him to come immediately to her aid at any time. Minato also has the ability to send people to different markings simultaneously through direct contact with either himself or his chakra. Minato's shadow clone can use the technique to summon the original to its position. His prowess with this technique has made it Minato's signature technique.
Minato, like Tobirama, has derived original techniques from this one. One of them is Spiralling Flash Super Round Dance Howl Style Three, in which he uses Flying Thunder God Technique in combination with Shadow Clone Technique and his Rasengan technique. He can also use the Flying Thunder God: Guiding Thunder which can warp away anything in contact, such as the Tailed Beast Ball. Minato also can use the Flying Thunder God Mutually Instantaneous Revolving Technique, which he performed with Tobirama on the battlefield to devastating effects on Obito Uchiha.

Kamui
| |||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The Kamui is a powerful and versatile Mangekyō Sharingan dōjutsu which manipulates spacetime in two very distinct, yet interrelated functions: transportation and intangibility.
Kamui allows the user to transfer anything into a unique pocket dimension. This dimension is completely inaccessible to anything other than Kamui. This technique, when used through the right eye, is also able to make the user "intangible" by transporting portions of their body to the same pocket dimension. This ability is extremely versatile in its application as each eye projects a distorted barrier space that serves as the aperture to a shared pocket dimension. This barrier space vortex generates a strong gravitational pull, characterized by swirling distortion in light waves. A user of the right eye requires physical contact to absorb a target, while a user of the left can do so from a distance. Kamui also allows the user to teleport to virtually any location they desire by absorbing their own body into the swirling distortion. When using Kamui to teleport, whatever the user is touching will be warped along with them and their chakra becomes untraceable. It was fast enough to effectively counter a full speed Naruto in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. After storing a target within Kamui's dimension, the user can then eject it from their eye at any time. This can be done with varying degrees of force, as demonstrated by Obito, who ejected various weapons at a moment's notice, giving opponents little opportunity to react accordingly. While in Kamui's dimension, the user can transport targets out of said dimension at any time, even without establishing physical contact. Despite not always being present, Obito could keep targets under genjutsu while they were confined inside this technique's pocket dimension, thus keeping them incapacitated for extended durations. A user of Kamui can synchronize with other space–time techniques, allowing them access to other dimensions. After entering a new dimension through this method, the user is able to travel to and from said dimension, as well as any other connected dimensions, at will.

Goku is the only Saiyan in the series to achieve all known Saiyan transformations. In Dragon Ball, he can transform into a gigantic monkey-like creature called an Ōzaru (大猿, lit. "Great Ape") when he stares at a full moon while possessing a Saiyan tail. Goku loses the ability to make this transformation when his friends cut off his tail. Although it grows back, Goku's tail is later permanently removed by Kami. Goku becomes the first Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人, Sūpā Saiya-jin) in a thousand years; becoming enraged when Freeza kills Kuririn on the planet Namek. Each metamorphosis changes Goku's appearance and enormously enhances his abilities. After training to better control the first and second levels of Super Saiyan, the third Super Saiyan form causes Goku to act in a much more serious manner.
An alternative, more innately powerful level called Super Saiyan God (超サイヤ人ゴッド, Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo) was reached by Goku in the canonical film Battle of Gods. Though the temporary transformation wore out, Goku managed to harness its godly powers in his base form. Under Whis's tutelage, Goku managed to achieve a blue-haired Saiyan transformation, known as the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人ゴッド超サイヤ人, Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo Sūpā Saiya-jin).
Another ability Goku has is to fuse with others, so long as their power levels are equalized. Later, he uses the Potara Earrings presented to him by the Old Kaiō-shin, which results in a "perfect fusion", but it's a permanent fusion. Goku first attempts to fuse with Gohan, but this fails when the latter is absorbed by Buu, and so he persuades the newly arrived Vegeta to fuse with him, creating Vegito (ベジット, Bejitto, "Vegerot" in Viz Media's manga translation). In the film Fusion Reborn, the two use the Metamorese Fusion Dance, which creates Gogeta (ゴジータ, Gojīta), who sports slight visual differences from their previous merger.
