Draft for a series of lists on SE European mammals.
Taxonomic changes since MJ&a99:
- Erinaceus concolor -> roumanicus
- Clethrionomys -> Myodes
- Pipistrellus pygmaeus split from pipistrellus; records of P. pipistrellus are suspect, not taking from MJ&a. Also note hanaki on Crete.
- Myotis mystacinus split into aurascens, alcathoe; records are suspect, not taking from MJ&a. Much complexity; cf. Mayer et al. (2007); Benda et al. papers.
- Myotis blythii–oxygnathus–myotis. Simmons (2005) separates European blythii as oxygnathus, but some do not accept that (e.g., Benda et al., 2009, on Crete bats). Others argue the European forms are not separate species because of <3% mtDNA divergence.
- Plecotus completely revised, not taking from MJ&a
- Microtus rossiaemeridionalis -> levis
- Eptesicus bottae -> anatolicus in Greece.
Species that occur only in Kosovo, a disputed region that is either an independent country or part of Serbia (see political status of Kosovo), are listed within square brackets ([]).
