Beacon Earth Day

I hadn't thought of visiting Beacon except on that day, Saturday April 15. Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Earth Day Beacon, NY 2023. I was thinking of visiting Ossining this Sunday for some photography around the Croton Reservoir, but the forecast is for wind making some discomfort while bicycling there, so that might be better another day. If you or others want to set a day, including this coming Sunday, to walk around a town where I have never been, I can pretty easily do it since, being an old retired guy, I seldom have a schedule conflict. And of course I'll be pleased. A weekday might be better because train service is more frequent, or I could find out about weekend bus service. - @Emjackson42: it doesn't matter whether we are pinged on our own own talk page, since we get an Alert Bar (OBOD, Orange Bar of Doom) anyway. I'm a bit slow in answering today, for no good reason. I have discovered that D-Day for this session, April 15, is also the first day of the annual Northeast Astronomy Forum (NEAF) which at last is running again at Rockland Community College in Suffern after a 3-year plague break. So, they'll get along without me. Maybe to make up I should write them an article. As for going to Beacon, no, not tomorrow and maybe not at all before D-Day. I mistakenly assumed you sought pictures before then; it would have been an effort but not a big problem either way. In any case you ought to snap and upload some camera phone pix pretty soon, inside the library and especially out. On D-Day there's only one morning train that I'm likely to be on, which will put me in the station with more than half an hour to walk a mere mile. So, naturally I'll snap a few pictures upon arrival, and some during the session. As for a separate photography day, best is to bring my bicycle so as to allow getting to many locations not only in Beacon but across the river in Newburgh. Unless we use other transport. [edit]I sent this to an E-mail group on another topic, but found myself writing this summary:
Last night at the monthly Wikimedia NYC Wikiwednesday I tried to make my new Lumix G100 camera work as a Webcam, but after following the instructions in a Youtube video I failed. Must study it more. Other participants made their Logitech Webcam do the job. Less optically sophisticated, but in Logi products working with a computer is the actual design goal rather than an afterthought. Making the Samsung Android tablet work as a second screen, however, worked quite nicely.
Mostly I was busy with a student, a retired librarian who had somewhere else presented a slideshow about a sculpture on West End Avenue and wanted to make it into a Wikipedia article. We ran into a problem with cut & paste on her Macbook which another teacher with relevant experience was able to handle. It will still be a somewhat complex job, converting a chatty slideshow commentary into proper prose in scholarly style with references, but she’s got the basic skills and only has to learn various oddities of our editorial policies and software. I hope to see her again in the next few days since we live near each other; nice when we can work with minds who understand scholarly work. Which, after all, is why many of our events are held at research libraries.
Also I am the test subject for the local Chapter’s new User Business Card. Some people suggested that since we’re not a business it isn’t a “business card” but I think the proposed alternatives were already used during the Gilded Age of “Cartes de Visite” so we might as well use the modern common term which will not need explanations. Even before passing it out I already have a criticism or two for the design. Anyway a few hours from now I’ll be at MacSorleys drinking with a less formal club of retired telephone workers and will look for people who ought to have the card. Members of biker gangs are actually better prospects; maybe I’ll join one of them at another bar on Sunday. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:15, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

History of Nursing in Newark edit-a-thon at Rutgers University

You are invited to join Rutgers-Newark archivists from Dana Library and Smith Library on Tuesday, October 3 (3:00pm-5:00pm) for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon highlighting the history of medicine in Newark. Come to Dana Library and help increase the online representation of important Newark scientists and health professionals on the largest open encyclopedia on the internet.
No experience editing Wikipedia is required. Beginners are encouraged to attend! At the beginning of the edit-a-thon we’ll have a brief introduction to Wikipedia. We’ll provide a list of articles to edit, as well as reference materials. In addition, we'll give a brief overview of archival collections related to the history of medicine housed at Smith and Dana Libraries at Rutgers-Newark. The edit-a-thon is free and open to the public. If you are not a current Rutgers student or employee, please bring a laptop to participate in the event.

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Photo you might be able to take?

Don't know if you still get out and bike around the city (I can't imagine you don't), but, if you do and get over to College Point in Queens any, I found out where the Dish Network call center George Santos worked at in 2011–12 is, and it looks like it could be photographed from nearby public streets (or even the driveway of the business next to it, if it's open). Since there's a paucity of images in the article due to the shortage of what we could reasonably use, if you could get over there and take and upload one that would be nice.

- So, I made a Wikidata item for it. 31-89 123rd Street (Q123675390) with geocoodinates so it will be a red dot on the WikiShootMe map when I bicycle through there. Though, my WD item doesn't say why the building is interesting; probably there's a good WD way of saying that. As for when I visit the neighborhood again, during the plague I aged at least a dozen years and now bike shorter distances and in warmer weather. Quora
[edit]Good answer to the "Can anyone ..." question. I've upvoted it. Mine is shorter though similar; as usual with Quora, I hadn't seen yours.
I've been keen on astronomy for over 70 years and I did a lot of biking when I lived in Dunedin but not since moving back to the North Island in 1971. I've not got into Wikidata. My main wiki work is on Familypedia.

- @Robin Patterson: Here in New York we have several astronomy clubs, but my favorite little club died in the plague even though none of the members did. I need to get into one of the bigger ones and make some sort of cooperation with our Wikimedia NYC chapter. Maybe in connection with the April 8 Total Eclipse. I am likely to give away my 100mm Maksutov next month. The tripod is too heavy to carry by hand anymore to a good observing site.
- The biker gangs, no. For one thing I bike less now that I'm no longer in my 60s. I went out on a photo ride with a fellow editor-biker a couple months ago and being one third my age she had to limit her speed severely so I could keep up. Ah well, I can still do short solo rides looking out for targets that have coordinates in WD but have no photo. I hope things go well for you in the new year. - Lovely, thanks, Lane. Not everybody understands that, though young women are the class most assiduously flattered, old men are the ones most hungry for it, eagerly lapping it up even when it's done without a name. I am especially pleased that our friend @Annierau: has exaggerated; I actually spend most days at the computer and our bike ride was only once, and she was the one who had to wait for me to catch up. Jim Henderson (Wikipedian) - All righty; we had communication uncertainties at both ends except I don't have the excuse of working in unfamiliar software. And obviously I'm hours later than I said. Been busy all week starting with the eclipse in Rochester, and various meetings and such starting a couple hours after my return. Tomorrow's two zoomcalls will leave me with an empty week in my calendar. With any luck I'll start catching up on my backlog of new photo editing, uploading, curating old photos, checking my 5000 watchlisted articles here in ENWP (English Wikipedia), etc. The two links are good.

- I've lengthened your two sentences into three, so feel free to chop away any excess. Or add; whatever. As you saw in Commons, we have plenty of pictures of me; problem is they all make me look old. Well, yeah.
- For WD and photo demos, I like to use a fresh example. Presumably the building where we meet has no Wikidata item or Commons picture, and fails to meet the criteria of WP:NOTABILITY. Thus, it will work nicely if you find the data (street address, construction date, owner, business tenants, height and no, of course we don't need all of those and might use any other data) beforehand. With some of that, we can build the WD item before everyone's eyes. Or some other building or old (before 20th century) statue or monument for which we can step outside and snap a picture. I like built structures because they have locations.
- As usual in talk pages, any talkpage WP:STALKER is welcome to butt in here with questions, corrections, ideas, whatever. For those people, we're talking about a meeting of a photo club near City Hall in Jersey City on May 20. At least, I think that's correct.
