The name "Wakeley" means 'Waca's wood/clearing'.[2] Wakeley was recorded in the Domesday Book as Wachelei.[3] "Wakely" is recorded as an alternative name for "Wakeley.[4] The surname Wakeley derives from the village.[5] Wakeley was an extra-parochial tract,[6] in 1858 it became a separate civil parish,[7] on 25 March 1883 the parish was abolished and merged with Westmill.[8] Wakeley is a deserted medieval village which once had a church.[9]
