IIRC, that is acceptable in articles about particular characters, but not in "list of character" articles. Otherwise you'd end up with 50 non-free images in each such article. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:06, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't make much sense. Each image should be independently assessed for whether it satisfies the WP:NFCC. If each image is used for the valid purpose of identifying the character, it shouldn't matter that the characters are in the same or separate pages. IIRC there's nothing in the NFC limiting the use of many non-free images in the same page for different purposes. An encyclopedia is meant to be exhaustive; including only "some" of the characters would be akin to acknowledging they're included for decorative purposes. Why are images of these characters important to my understanding of the topic and why is that understanding impaired by an absence of this image? Is there something about their appearance that if I don't see it, I won't understand? Simply put: I don't trust the uploader's assurance that it is own work, given the small size of the image and the uploader's apparently bad history concerning uploaded images (have a look at his talk page). I tried a web search to find this image on a website prior to its upload here, but was not successful. Strong Keep. It's not a joke. It's accurate and it's used to illustrate the article about the song, one whose most famous lines is quoted in the article. See for example this Boston Globe article: "'I really did drive the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston,' he said, referencing a famous line in his song, 'Sweet Baby James.' I have a real connection to this place." The line is referenced in lots of other places, see for example this story or this story or this headline or this travel book and so forth. It's hard enough to find images that illustrate song articles, and this one shows signs for both destinations (one of the few places on the Pike where that happens).
