In this independent study, the student will edit and eventually create biographical Wikipedia articles about underrepresented composers.
Students in music conservatories have interesting and unique informational needs. They aren't writing research papers, but they're constantly researching composers, constantly seeking information, constantly curating repertoire.
Through learning to edit Wikipedia, the student will also learn and practice skills like digital literacy, understanding copyright and licensing, and non-academic professional writing. They will have to curate research materials and even find materials outside of the Western music canon. These skills will culminate in at least one original article submitted to Wikipedia.
And if there is enough local interest, the student will organize and host an edit-a-thon at our conservatory for interested students, faculty, and staff. This will teach the student event planning and instruction skills.
