The sources in the revision at the time of writing are as follows. I maintain that they are not sufficient for showing that a Taiwanese archipelago is a recognised concept.
West, Barbara A., Encyclopedia of the peoples of Asia and Oceania, p. 1002
This is probably the best source in the whole list. If there were more usage of "Taiwanese archipelago" in this manner in reliable sources, with consistent definitions of its constituent islands, a case could be made for arguing that the concept is widely recognised. But as it is, it is a mention in an encyclopedia entry talking about an aboriginal people, not a discussion of a Taiwanese archipelago.
李獻璋, 1962, 「台灣諸島的拓殖與媽祖的崇祀」(Community growth on the Taiwan Islands and worship of Mazu) and in 華僑生活
楊青矗, 1987, 台灣命運中國結: 政治批判 (Fate of Taiwan, connection to China: a political critique), p. 264
日本的東海政策, p.21
國防科技概論-全民國防教育補充教材, p.22
These sources are used as examples of the use of "台灣諸島". They are not evidence that a Taiwanese archipelago exists.
小川琢治, 1896, 台湾諸島誌 (The Taiwan Islands chronicles)
This is a book dating back to when Taiwan was annexed to Japan. At that time, it would have made sense for the Japanese refer to the annexed islands collectively as "the Taiwan islands", which is what happened here.
This is an article from a website of a foundation founded in memory of a professor suspected to be killed during the White Terror, to "promote social, economical and political justice as well as human rights for the Taiwanese people". It is not a reliable source for information regarding the geography of Taiwan and its surrounding islands. (The definition here is also inconsistent with the one in the Encyclopedia of the peoples of Asia and Oceania above.)
This is a website operated by the government of the PRC. Again, not a reliable source on the geography of Taiwan and its surrounding islands.
International Hydrographic Organisation, 1953, "Limits of Oceans and Seas, 3rd edition"
This source is used to support the boundaries of South China Sea and does not mention a Taiwanese archipelago.
Berckhemer, Hans and Hsü, Kenneth Jinghwa, Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics Working Group 3, Alpine-Mediterranean geodynamics, p. 384
This source is used to support that Taiwan is part of a regional island arc and does not mention a Taiwanese archipelago.
Chiu, Chih-Peng and Wei, Suechun, "Child Care Friendly Policies and Integration of ECEC in Taiwan" in International Journal of Child Care and Education Policy, 2011, Vol.5, No.2, 1-19, p.1
This is a journal article on child care policies in Taiwan containing a passing mention of a Taiwanese archipelago. It is neither a discussion of regional geography nor a reliable source on that topic.
I had tried to look for sources online as well, for fear that I was simply ignorant of an existing concept, and could not find evidence stronger than the first source on this list. wctaiwan (talk) 12:38, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am marking this answered and not moving it to the discussion. The user at this IP is address hopping (using three different addresses this evening) and is returning to the exact same AfD and move discussions where a recent IP sock of a banned user was participating. This is very likely a returning sock on a different ISP. This AfD is semi-protected for exactly this reason. SchmuckyTheCat (talk)
