Query

I posted a notice on the talk page of an admin who closed a Deletion Review because there was no notice posted at the original AFD that the closure had been overturned. When I looked into a few other examples, it seems like there is no standard procedure for noting that the closure of an AFD was no longer "in force". So, I came here and looked at Wikipedia:Deletion review#Closing reviews, expecting to see some guidance but, surprise!, it doesn't have any information on what a closure needs to do with an overturned deletion discussion. I wasn't expecting a lack of documentation in a bureaucracy like Wikipedia.

So, am I missing something here? What is a closer supposed to post on an AFD discussion that has been overruled? Should the closure be struck out? A notice posted linking to the Deletion Review? How should a closer indicate that a deletion decision was no longer valid? Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 03:51, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Seems the instruction are at Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Administrator_instructions. It only says to make sure to link to the deletion review discussion in your log.—Bagumba (talk) 04:05, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
The AFD shouldn't need to be edited at all if it's already got the ((delrevxfd)) that should've been added at the start of the review, unless the result is specifically to relist the old AFD instead of starting a new one or overturning outright. —Cryptic 04:27, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

That's the problem, Cryptic, there's no tag on the AFD stating that there is a Deletion Review occurring. I guess the editor who opened the review didn't read the instructions.
And I came across another AFD that had been reviewed at DR with a similar result where the admin struck out the closure and added a statement about the DR result so there is more than one way to do this. I hadn't seen Wikipedia:Deletion review/Administrator instructions before but, oh my God, that page is a confusing disaster! It looks like it was written in 2008 and never updated. That is terrible documentation. The colored fonts, the bolded text, all of the confusing brackets, ugh! Maybe we could have one or two of the regular DR closers update the page to reflect current expectations. It's ok to add the template afterwards. It's also acceptable to not even bother with that much, if you've deleted or restored the article and the "logs" link in the afd links to the DRV page. The important part is that people who look at the afd and wonder why the article link is red when the afd says "keep", or blue when is says "delete", can click through to the overriding discussion. On the other hand, changing the afd so it looks like it was closed like the DRV says it should have been makes the DRV discussion not make sense.
