Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) adalah seorang pelukis, pemahat, perancang grafis, dan penyair asal Jerman.[1] Seorang seniman yang produktif, Ernst adalah pelopor utama gerakan Dadaisme dan Surealisme di Eropa.

Dia tidak memiliki pelatihan artistik formal, tetapi sikap eksperimentalnya terhadap pembuatan seni menghasilkan penemuannya diberinama frottagea, sebuah teknik yang menggunakan gosokan pensil pada objek bertekstur dan permukaan relief untuk membuat gambar grattage, teknik serupa di mana cat digoreskan di atas kanvas untuk mengungkapkan jejak objek yang ditempatkan di bawahnya. Ernst terkenal karena metode menggambarnya yang tidak konvensional serta untuk membuat novel dan pamflet menggunakan metode kolase. Dia bertugas sebagai tentara selama empat tahun selama Perang Dunia I, dan pengalaman ini membuatnya terkejut, trauma, dan kritis terhadap dunia modern. Selama Perang Dunia II ditetapkan sebagai orang asing yang tidak diinginkan saat tinggal di Prancis. Dia meninggal di Paris pada 1 April 1976. Max Ernst adalah putra pelukis Philipp Ernst (1862-1942) dan Louise Kopp.
