The arrondissement of Roanne is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Loire département, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its capital, and a subprefecture of the department, is the city of Roanne.
When the Loire department was created in 1793, the arrondissement of Roanne was part of that original department.[2]
The arrondissement of Roanne is bordered to the north by the Saône-et-Loire department, to the east by the Rhône department, to the south by the arrondissement of Montbrison, to the southwest by the Puy-de-Dôme department, and to the west by the Allier department.
It is the most northern arrondissement of the department; it has an area of 1,779.9 square kilometres (687.2 square miles),[3] and a population of 157,268 inhabitants with a density of 88.4 inhabitants/km².[4]
