George Habash (1926-2008) also known by his nickname Al-Hakim (the wise one), was a Palestinian revolutionary and political leader. He was born in Lydda, Palestine. Habash was the founder of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a famous Palestinian armed resistance group. He remained a significant figure in Palestinian politics until his retirement in 2000. George Habash died in 2008.[1]

Early life

Habash was born in Lydda (today's Lod) to a Greek Orthodox Christian Palestinian family in 1926.[2]

Habash was a medical student at the American University of Beirut. After finishing at the top of his class in medical school in 1951, George Habash went on to work as a Doctor in refugee camps in Jordan. He partnered with Wadie Haddad to run a clinic in Amman. Habash held a strong belief that the existence of Israel should be brought to an end using any available methods, including political violence.[3]

Death

Habash died on 26 January 2008, at the age of 81 due to a cardiac arrest in the Jordan Hospital in Amman, Jordan.[4]
