Gex (French: [ʒɛks]) is a commune in the Ain department. It is in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in east France. Gex is the capital of the arrondissement of Gex and of the historical region Pays de Gex.
It is 5 km (3.1 mi) from the Swiss border and 16 km (9.9 mi) from Geneva.
The area of Gex is 32.0 km2 (12.4 sq mi).[1] Its average altitude is 1,073 m (3,520 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 610 m (2,000 ft).[2]
