The Kochi Metro is a proposed rapid transit system for the city of Kochi, in India. It was proposed in the year 2005 but was delayed due to the reason that the union government expressing serious doubts about the economic viability of the project.[1] The alignment was created by the DMRC and is planned to be made on a Public-Private Partnership basis. The nodal agency for the project is KINFRA. On completion, a newly formed Kochi Metro Rail Corporation would operate the metro.Kochi Metro will follow the Chennai Metro model.The metro rail project , is being set up at an estimated cost of ₹ 5146 crore, and is expected to get completed in 2016. Already, the Ernakulam north overbridge is being pulled down as part of the initial project work.[2]
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was signed up for drawing the DPR (detailed project report) of Rs 2000-crore Kochi metro transport on 22 December 2004. The Kerala cabinet under the Chief Ministership of Oommen Chandy gave clearance for the Kochi metro project, replacing Konkan Railway Corporation backed Skybus project. It was expected to be started by 2006 and completed by 2010.[3] The land for the project was proposed to be handed over to the DMRC on 10/06/2011 and all the detailed study for the possible traffic congestion especially in North Ernakulam when the work will commence was also said to be completed by the city traffic commissioner .[4] The ministry of urban development has approved the revised proposal for Kochi Metro
The plan submitted by DMRC in 2005 was for an estimated ₹3,000 crore (US$359.5 million). Due to the delay in implementing the project, the DMRC has revised the plan in August 2010 and the cost estimate stands at ₹6,000 crore (US$718.9 million).[5] The Kerala government had sought Central Government's assistance for the project to be built in the lines of the Delhi metro project in terms of funding. The Centre refused this request.[6] However, no statement has been formally issued. Kerala Finance Minister Dr. Thomas Issac in his budget speech said that ₹ 156 crore has been allotted for the Kochi Metro Rail project.[7]

The DMRC has submitted a proposal for the metro rail project to be extended till the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery.
